William J. Poppa McCallister McKensey, 59, of Fayetteville, NC., entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at Governors Creek Health & Rehabilitation Center, Green Cove Springs. He was the son of Alex McAllister, Sr. and Rutha Mae McKensey, born Friday, September 22, 1950 in Parkton, Robeson County, North Carolina. He was educated in the Robeson County School District and was a longtime resident of North Carolina. Poppa was of the Baptist Faith and he loved to sing and enjoyed playing his guitar. In 2005, Poppa also known as Mac in the community, relocated to Florida. For the past two years, he has been a resident of Governors Creek Health Care in Green Cove Springs. It gave him great joy to cheer others through a song when they were feeling down.
He was preceded in eternal rest by his beloved mother, Rutha Mae McKensey; son, Boris McCallister; and brother, Gregory McAllister.
To cherish his memories: father, Alex McAllister, Sr., Fayetteville, NC; son, Rev. Dwayne (Wanda) McCallister, Sr., Palatka; brother, Alex McAllister, Jr., sister, Ruby McAllister, both of Southern Pines, NC; three grandchildren, Dwayne, Jr., Leticia and Alicia McCallister, all of Palatka; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday (Today) July 2 at the Chapel of Serenity. Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3 at House of God Church, 723 North Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, Dr. Gilbert L. Evans, Jr., Pastor, officiating. Rev. Karl N. Flagg, Pastor of Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, is the eulogist. The cortege will assemble 10:20 a.m. Saturday at his sons residence, 3205 Blair Drive, Palatka.
Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery.
