Willard Boyd Evins, Jr., 80, of San Mateo, entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at his San Mateo residence. A native of Citra (Marion County), he was the son of Rev. and Mrs. Willard B. (Elizabeth) Evins, Sr., born on Wednesday, March 2, 1932. He was a 1950 graduate of Fessenden Academy in Ocala. On December 29, 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and earned an honorable discharge in 1954. He was a devoted member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church where he served over the years as a Trustee, Steward, Church School Superintendent (Emeritus) and Usher Board # 2 President (Emeritus). On June 2, 1973 he was united in holy matrimony to June Deloris Douglas. On August 14, 2010, he was inducted into Bethel's Hall of Fame. Willard was affectionately known as "Mr. Winn-Dixie" for his volunteerism. Those preceding him in eternal rest include his parents; sister, Pearlie Mae Evins;sons, Eugene and Calveston Evins. Those who cherish his memories: beloved wife of 39 years, June D. Evins, San Mateo; children, Debra (Donald) Montgomery, Ewing, N.J., James Evins, San Diego, CA; Willard B. Evins, III, Bradenton; Tracy Evins, Jacksonville; Telica Evins, Palatka; Willard Rishawn Douglas Evins, Jacksonville; "just like a son," Henry Thomas, Jacksonville; sisters & brothers, Ezekiel Evans, Wilbert Evins, Queen Ester (Hallbrook, Sr.) Polite, all of Palatka; Marie (Thomas) Dixon-Jones, Ocala; Willie Mae (George) Gibson, Miami; Susie (David) Givens, Green Cove Springs; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and caring friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday June 15th at the "Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16th, at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 719 Reid Street, Palatka, Rev. James H. McGriff, Pastor-Eulogist. The cortege will assemble 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Bethel's fellowship hall. Interment with Military Honors will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, in the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
