Thompkins
July 14, 1935 – January 19, 2019
Vonciel Varner Thompkins, 83, retired Putnam County Educator and longtime resident of Johnson Crossroads, entered the sunset of life on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Community Hospice, Bailey Center for Caring, St. Augustine. A native of Leeds, AL, she was born on Sunday, July 14, 1935 to Haymon and Dora (Campbell) Varner. She was educated in the Jefferson County, AL School District and a1954 graduate of Moton High School. After graduating and relocating to West Putnam County, (Johnson Crossroads) FL, she continued her pursuit of education at the Florida Normal Industrial and Memorial College in St. Augustine (now Florida Memorial University, Miami), where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Education. She was employed by the Putnam County School District and was a distinguished Physical Education instructor serving several generations, retiring following 35+ years of meritorious service. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Vernish "Snookie" Thompkins and they were united for over 50 years until his eternal transition on January 5, 2007. Vonciel was a faithful member of Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church of Johnson Crossroads, where she served with the Deaconess Ministry, Choir Ministry, and Music Ministry as church pianist, working with the Junior Choir and the youth of the church and community for many years. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano. In her leisure time, Vonciel enjoyed gardening, shopping, fine fashions (acknowledged for her coordinated attire including her purse and shoes).
In addition to her parents and husband; she was preceded in eternal rest by two sisters, Violet Stubbs and Barbara Ann Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughter, Paula Adrene (Gregory) Archie, Sr., St. Augustine; grandson, Gregory Vernish (Tanekka) Archie, Jacksonville; granddaughter, Kanta Shawntell (Minister Donta) Allen, St. Augustine; 4 great grandchildren, Maurquice Miller, Amaya Renee Archie, Dalton Isaiah Allen, Dillion Noah Allen; 1 great great granddaughter, Livia Renee Miller; sisters, Doris McGraw, Evelyn McCloud both of Miami; Carolyn Howard, Jamaica, NY; numerous god children; special friends, Morell Jenkins, Johnson Crossroads; Freeman DuBois, Gordon Chapel; a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation of Family and Friends will be 5-8 p.m., Friday, January 25, at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m., Saturday, January 26, at Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church, 146 S. County Road 21, Hawthorne, Dr. Clarence Woods, Pastor, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Gilgal Cemetery, Hawthorne.
