Obituary

Vincent Godwin Taylor, patriarch of the Felix, Ferdinand and Goodchild families, was born on Tuesday, October 3, 1933, at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice, Guyana. He was a man of integrity, and noble character. Vincent was the only child of his mother, Ethel Ferdinand and Harold Taylor, who also fathered Adel Taylor, his only sister who was eight years older than Vincent. At the age of five years old, Vincent's mother became ill with typhoid fever and died in 1938. Later, his sister Adel, who at the age of 18, married Gladstone Goodchild and moved to Sisters Village, in Berbice, where they raised their seven children Malcolm, Norman, Stanley, Beverley, Gregory (deceased - Stay and Phillip).

Vincent was the prized possession of his grandmother Henrietta Ferdinand, who nurtured and raised him in a community of love and respect. He lived together with his grandmother, who resided with his aunt, Ann Marie and her husband Grenville Felix, in Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice. Vincent's father Arnold, subsequently migrated to Suriname, Dutch Guiana. Vincent's mother was the third child of six children. (Fredrick, Hilda, Isaac, Ethel, James, and Ann) Ethel was predeceased by her mother in 1938. It's hard to believe but Vincent was a chubby young man. As a result, he was affectionately called " Chubby " by his uncles Fredrick Ferdinand, a Primary School Headmaster (Principal) and James Ferdinand, a Forest Officer. Vincent resented his new title and cried ceaselessly and complained to his grandmother and anyone who would give ear to his anguish and resentment of his new name, as his uncles teased, " You're Chubby, Chubby, until you're dead !"

As the years progressed, Vincent attended Cumberland Elementary School and St Columbus School where he took and passed the required City and Gills exam. He subsequently attended a machine shop apprenticeship program at the Rose Hall Estate, East Canje, Berbice, under the supervision of his uncle, Grenville Felix, where he completed his apprenticeship program. Later, Vincent enrolled in the Technical Institute in Georgetown where he developed his technical skills as a Pipe-Fitter Machinist. He later joined the Guyana Fire Department at Atkinson as a Machinist, and resided at the home of Winifred Simpson, which was a housing accommodation for his new position. The Simpson family welcomed Vincent in a cocoon of love and support as he ventured into his new job as a qualified competent machinist. He was revered and respected as the "big brother" to Dolly (Aunt Dolly), Winifred's daughter in the Simpson's family.

Prior to Vincent moving to Georgetown, he met Elaine Eliza Hazel in the 1950s and developed a relationship where he fathered his first child, Pamela Taylor. Vincent subsequently relocated to Georgetown to assume his new position at the Fire Department. Later he met Norma Jarvis, a young and beautiful schoolteacher, who became the love of his life. They were married October 31, 1959, and resided at 33 Hatfield Street, Lodge in Georgetown where they nurtured their four children Vincent Jr., Brian, Maxwell, and Felicity (Joy).

Vincent Taylor, was revered as a dignified and respectable man, known for his loyalty to family and friends. He had never forgotten his only sister Adel when he received his salary, he would send her a money order of $7.50 which was considered "big money" and would ride his bicycle four miles in the blazing hot sun to carry ice cream for his nieces and nephews but especially for his favorite nephew Malcolm.

In spite of the many health challenges Vincent experienced during his life's journey, he remained vigilant and trusted God in all things. In the late 1960s Vincent migrated to the United States on a work visa as a welder for Singer Sewing Company and stayed with his cousin Ovid Felix. He subsequently brought his wife Norma to the United States. Soon after arrival he and his wife celebrated the birth of their daughter Nikki who became one of the joys of their American experience. Later the four Taylor children arrived in the US. Together they embraced the American dream where Norma became a geriatric nurse, and they raised their five children. Pamela emigrated soon after. Vincent's spiritual experience increased as he continued to have medical challenges that required hospitalization. But while hospitalized he met a Chaplin who prayed with him, and upon his discharge he began to attend the Union Congregational Church (Union), with his family.

Vincent and his family attended Union regularly before relocating to Palm Coast, Florida, where he became a member of the Palm Coast First Baptist Church. Vincent remained vigilant in his worship service to God and claimed the blessings of I Corinthians 13:8-13. He embraced the blessings of Charity as his greatest motivator. Vincent continued to worship God with his family and little sister Dolly despite his health challenges for 30 years. He served as a Deacon and drove the church bus to pick up worshipers who needed a ride to church, as he fulfilled the duties of an ardent servant in the vineyard of God and his family. Friday July 11,2025, Vincent spoke one of his last words with his cousin Claudette Felix-Perry, when she called him by his love name, "Chubby" he answered and said, " Yes, I'm chubby, chubby, til I dead ."

Vincent was preceded in death by his wife Norma on April 16, 2020. On Monday, July 14, 2025, at about 3:00 am at Sophie's Choice, LLC, in Palm Coast, Vincent went to sleep in Jesus, quietly and gently at age 91. Precious memories of Vincent remain with his Children: Pamela, Vincent Junior (Charmaine), Brian (Hope), Maxwell (Natalie), Joy (Lloyd), Nikki (David); Grandchildren: Keith, Ashley, Cory, Tammy, Tyrone, Cecilia, Samantha, Jason, Chardai, Olivia, Brittney and Aleeyah; Great Grandchildren: Sariyah, Penelope, Kai and Christian; Extended Families: Taylors, Felixes, Goodchilds, Ferdinands, Tuckers, Gravesandys and too numerous to list friends and neighbors. May Vincent's soul rest in Eternal Peace and rise in Glory.
