Velma T. Shorter, 80, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Monday, September 3, 2012 at Governor's Creek Health and Rehab Center, Green Cove Springs, following an extended illness. A native of Cordele, GA., she was born on Tuesday, August 30, 1932 to Mr. & Mrs. Clem (Jeffie Lee Lamar) Shorter, Sr. She was educated in the Crisp County GA school district at the Holsey-Cobb Institute (a senior high school in Cordele). She was a member and church mother of Grace & Truth Deliverance Ministries and also attended Rhema Healing & Deliverance Ministries. Over the years, Velma was a seasonal farm worker and daycare employee. Her hobbies included reading, singing, cooking, and just being a "mother" to all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by brothers, Lendbell Shorter, Thomas Shorter, Sr., Peter Shorter, and King Lamar Shorter; sisters, Mattie Shorter, Clara Bell Royal, and Lula M. Smith. To cherish her memories: sons and daughters, Dennis Shorter, Evangelist Gloria (Leonard) Wright, Sr., and Lois Marie Jones, all of Palatka; Leon (Roslyn) Jones, Sr., Gainesville; Diane (William) White, Atlanta, GA; Renea (Tommy Lee) Jones, Elizabeth City, DE; Felicia (Anthony) Gills, Kissimmee; sister, Dorothy Lee (Charlie James) King, Cordele; brother, Clem (Annie Bell) Shorter, Jr., East Palatka; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; godson, Carl Johnson, Palatka; goddaughter, Annie Ruth Garner, East Palatka, and a host of other caring relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, September 7 and Homegoing Celebration 11 a.m., Saturday, September 8 at the "Chapel of Serenity." Apostle Dr. Cora B. Fells, Senior Pastor, Grace & Truth Deliverance Ministries, is the eulogist. The cortege will assemble at 10:30 a.m. at her daughter Lois Jones' residence, 506 N. 23rd Street, # C-149, Palatka. Interment will be in Pattersonville Memorial Cemetery, East Palatka.
