Mr. Urey Burrell, Jr., 84, of Crescent City, was a native of Ocala, FL., born on June 30, 1928 to Mr. and Mrs. Urey Burrell, Sr. At the age of eight the Burrell family relocated to the Orlando area where he graduated from Jones High School. He subsequently earned his Mortuary Science Degree and served the Orange County area working as an employee of Bruton's Funeral Home. In 1978, he moved to Crescent City, fulfilling his lifelong dream of become a funeral home owner and was the humble entrepreneur of Burrell's Funeral Home located at 800 Huntington Road until his declining health precluded him from serving. While residing in Orlando he was a member of Carter Tabernacle C.M.E. Church and in 1978 he joined Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, Crescent City, and served as a faithful member for over 32 years. He served in numerous ministries including, Steward Pro-Tem, Trustee, and on the Financial Committee. Mr. Burrell grew to love Crescent City as well as the neighboring communities and set out to make a difference. Under the leadership of former Crescent City Mayor, Nancy Harris, a proclamation was issued declaring June 27 as "Urey Burrell Day." He was a member of the Florida Mortician's Association, 4th Regional District; board member of Evergreen Cemetery; former member of the Masonic Lodge, the Crescent City Women's Civic Association Community Council and served as past President of the Welaka Neighborhood Development Corporation. He was preceded in eternal rest by his sisters, Naomi Nance and Essie Burrell. Mr. Burrell entered the sunset of life on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, to be with his Lord and Saviour eternally. Those left to cherish his memories: devoted son: Winifred Lavel Burrell, Casselberry, Florida; beloved daughters: Vernita Penick, Atlanta, GA., Gail Burrell, Orlando; Nekiesha Burrell, South Daytona; caring brother: Douglas Burrell, Orlando; loving sister: Rosa Lee (Thomas) Edwards, Apopka; 10 Grandchildren; 24 Great-Grandchildren; and a host of great great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially special friend and caregiver, Vernise Cohens, Crescent City. Visitation of family and friends will be from 5 - 8 p.m., Monday, August 6th at Union Bethel A.M.E Church, 200 Cedar Street, Crescent City. Celebration of Life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 7th, at True Foundation Ministries, 608 Randolph Street, Crescent City, Pastor Gwendolyn George. The Reverend Willie Williams, Pastor of Union Bethel A.M.E Church, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Crescent City.
