A native of Sparks, Cook County, GA., Urabell was born on Saturday, October 10, 1936 to Homer Lee Shanks, Sr., and Bertha Lee Munford Shanks. From an early age, her family relocated to Palatka and she was a 1958 graduate of Central Academy High School. Following graduation, she attended the Culinary Arts School of Florida in Jacksonville and has resided there since 1968. She attended West 27th Street Church of Christ, Brother Lionel Williams, Minister. As a retired dietician, she was a longtime employee of the United States Federal Reserve Bank and Methodist Hospital. Affectionately called "Ms. Kim," she was an avid gardener who enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. Urabell "Ms. Kim" Shanks Snead entered the sunset of life on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Haven Roberts Hospice Care Center, Palatka, following an extended illness. She was preceded in eternal rest by her parents; Homer Lee Shanks, Sr. and Bertha Lee Shanks-Walton; two grandsons, Rico L. Snead and Clifton D. Davis. She leaves to cherish her legacy of love, 5 daughters, Brenda Ann Buxton, Phyllis Lorraine Johnson, and Sylvia Jean Cooper, all of Jacksonville; Valaria Humphrey Murray and Bertha Lee (Samuel) Passmore, both of Palatka; devoted sister, Pastor Esther Mae McDuffie, Calhoun Falls, SC; brother, Homer Lee Shanks, Jr., East Palatka; special cousin "raised as a sister", Barbara Calhoun, Middleburg; 5 grandchildren, April M. Threet, Ricky Buxton, Jr., and Julius Buxton, all of Jacksonville; James W. Humphrey, III and Synettress (Dominic) Neeley, both of Palatka; 9 great-grandchildren; Ariel, Rico Jr., Jaylon, Semaj, Trinity, Talia, Darrell, Darrien, and J'Kyria; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 16, at "The Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17 at Church of God By Faith, 1511 Washington Street, Palatka, Elder Phillip Thomas, Pastor, presiding. Bishop Mark A. Jones, Presiding Prelate of New Life Temple Fellowship OCI, is the eulogist. The cortege will assemble 1:30 p.m. Saturday at her daughter Valaria Murray's residence, 1500 McClellan Street, Palatka. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery.
