Obituary

Deacon Thomas "Mitch" Mitchell, Jr., 83, a native and lifelong resident of East Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Putnam Community Medical Center, Palatka. The son of Thomas Mitchell, Sr., Amy Shaw Mitchell Dallas and Westley Dallas, he was born on Sunday, August 7, 1932. He was a graduate of Central Academy High School. Following graduation he was employed as a public works employee for the city of Palatka. On February 10, 1953, he was inducted through Selective Service into the United States Army. Pvt. Mitchell served in the 80th Eng. Co. (Depot), earned the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged. He subsequently served in the FL Army National Guard. He was a (retired) longtime tissue converting machine operator at Hudson Pulp & Paper mill (now G-P). "Mitch" was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Elvera Smith for over 55 years (who preceded him on January 16, 2015). He faithfully worshipped the Lord at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Hastings, serving as the Chairman of the Deacon's Ministry, sang in the church choir and was active in the Mentoring Ministry and Giving Ministry. "Mitch" enjoyed gardening, fishing, and singing.

In addition to his parents and devoted wife, he was preceded in eternal rest by his son, Edwin Brian Mitchell; granddaughter , Kamia Wright; two great-grandchildren, Christian Miller and Kyron J. Hall; siblings , George Shaw, Pearl Mitchell-Starlings, Rose Mitchell, Sylvester Dallas, and Ralph Dallas, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memories: children, Lisa Mitchell-Cleveland (David), Upper Marlboro, MD; Everette Anthony Mitchell, Fayetteville, NC; Denorris Mitchell-Hall (Pastor Tony), Federal Point; 6 grandchildren ; 18 great-grandchildren ; and a host of loving, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, godchildren and dear friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be 5-7 p.m.,Friday, April 15, at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 416 Daniels St., Hastings. Homegoing Celebration with U.S. Army military honorswill be 11 a.m.,Saturday, April 16atMount Tabor First Baptist Church,4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Rev. Karl N. Flagg, pastor. His pastor, Reverend Gregory James, of Mount Moriah, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in the Federal Point Cemetery.
