Obituary

Thelma Mildred Gilyard Walker, 86, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. The daughter of Willie and Inez (Gilyard) Roberts, she was born Monday, February 27, 1922. She was a native and lifelong resident of Palatka and a graduate of Central Academy High School. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Purcell Walker and to their union three sons and two daughters were born. Thelma accepted Christ at an early age and has been a faithful member of Bethel A.M.E. Church serving in numerous capacities. As a dutiful member of the Eunice Long Womens Missionary Society, she served as 1st assistant secretary for over 50 years; Charter member of Usher Board #2 since its inception in 1932; Branch member of the East Florida A.M.E. Church Conference; and committee member for the Bread of Life. Thelma was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She is preceded in eternal rest by her father, Willie Roberts, mother, Inez Roberts McClammy, stepfather, Aaron McClammy; husband, Purcell Walker, grandparents, Joseph & Amelia Gilyard; sons, SP4 (US Army) Lawrence Purcell Walker and Alvin Eugene Walker. She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughters and son; Inez (Jerry) Burns, Jacqueline Williams, and Melvin (Albertha) Walker, all of Palatka, daughter-in-law, Patricia Walker, Syracuse, NY, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alberta Scott, Irene Johnson, and Nathaniel Walker, all of East Palatka; Eddie W. Walker, Sr., Palatka; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be Friday, August 22, from 5-8 p.m. at the Chapel of Serenity. Homegoing Celebration will be Saturday, August 23, 4 pm at the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 719 Reid St, Palatka, Rev. James H. McGriff, Pastor, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Palatka.
