Sylvester Jerome Belton, 66, of Jacksonville, entered the sunset of life on Monday, May 18, 2015 at Miller County Hospital in Colquitt, GA. A native of Palatka, Sylvester was the son of Robert and Mary BaCullen Belton, born on Thursday, February 17, 1949. Sylvester was educated at Central Academy High School, class of 1967. He earned an associate's degree at St. Johns River Community College, Palatka and a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mathematics at Florida A&M University, Tallahassee. He taught math classes for two years in Africa with the Job Corps. Upon returning to the United States, he was a longtime educator with the Duval County School District as a math instructor until retirement. He was of the Baptist faith and during his childhood years was a member of Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, where he served as a Junior Deacon and sang in the youth choir. In addition to his beloved mother, Sylvester was preceded in eternal rest by his sister, Carlean Belton. To treasure his loving memories: father and step-mother, Robert (Gussie) Belton, Sr., Jacksonville; brothers, Rod Daton Belton, Jacksonville; Robert (Melanie) Belton, Jr., Palatka; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m., Friday, May 29 at the chapel. Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 30 at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity," with Reverend Karl N. Flagg, officiating.
