Obituary

Simeon Harvey Williams was born on December 25, 1953, in Jacksonville, to Frank and Jane E. (Kelly) Williams. At that time, Simeon was the youngest of four children. His parents remarried and each had additional children, totaling fifteen. He went to live with his grandmother, Idella, in Pompano Beach. She raised the family on a farm as migrant farmworkers.

Simeon was a devoted Christian who was baptized as a child at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Immokalee, where he participated in the youth programs. As an adult, even though he was often stationed overseas, he would visit with family and churches when he returned home. In many of the letters he sent home, he expressed his continued trust in God.

He was very curious and smart. He would think of the answers and bring them to life. He never got in trouble at school, in the community, at work or anywhere. He loved science, gardening, hunting and he could fix anything he set his mind to. Wearing his white lab coat, with his inquisitive mind, he researched how to preserve and stuff an eagle that he found dead. After he was done, the eagle looked alive with its beautiful feathers. One time, he built a bomb in the backyard using red tips from matches and placing them in a tube-pipe. The bomb exploded and the children screamed and ran out of the yard. His cousin, Jackie, called him a genius. Several high school teachers, especially in the Science and Industrial Arts subject areas, were also impressed with Simeon's knowledge of building things.

Simeon graduated from Immokalee High School in 1972 and immediately joined the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he helped many of his family and friends accomplish their goals and make it through hard times.  In 1984, while stationed in Charleston, SC, Simeon met the love of his life, Laschell. After dating for a year, the couple united in marriage on October 17, 1985. Simeon and Laschell traveled and lived in their travel trailer, wherever the call of duty was mandated. After many years of traveling, they settled in Jacksonville.

Simeon's love for family extended to his pets because they were considered his family too. Mutt, Lady Pearle, Zena Marie and Honeydew will forever be his children.

Professionally, Simeon received many recognitions and awards. He advanced in rank and earned the respect of his peers while traveling and serving his country around the world on land and sea. He often shared stories about his wonderful explorations. His duty stations included Recruit Training Command Orlando, Service School Command San Diego, California USS Canopus (AS-34), USS Capodanno (DE-1093), USS Grand Canyon (AR-28), Fleet Combat Training Center Dam Neck, Va., USS Illusive (MSO-448). Naval Training Center Orlando, and USS Emory S. Land (AS-39). His awards included 3 Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals, 3 Navy/Marine Corp Achievement Medals, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, 2 Navy "E" Awards, 5 Good Conduct Medals, 2 National Defense Service Medals, 4 Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Insignia. His professionalism and expertise earned him the respect and title of E8 Senior Chief Williams when he retired in 1998. For more than 10 years, he was affiliated with Systems, Inc. (IPS). He was awarded the 5-year and 10-year Service Recognition Plaques.

On Monday, July 31, 2023, Simeon received the ultimate call to receive his reward and eternal rest. Preceding Simeon in death are a host of cherished family members, friends, pets and loved ones.
