Sidney William Contee, Sr., 74, of Aquasco, MD/Palm Coast, FL, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Grand Oaks Health & Rehabilitation Center, Palm Coast. The son of Sidney Randolph Contee and Lucille Brown Contee, he was born on Monday, September 14, 1942 in Aquasco. Sidney was educated in the Prince George's County School District. At an early age, Sidney accepted Christ and became a member of the former John Wesley United Methodist Church (now known as Christ United Methodist Church) in Aquasco and served as a certified lay speaker. In 1961, Sidney met and subsequently married the love of his life, Lucille and they became the proud parents of four children. Sidney was the original founder of the gospel group, "The Mighty Wonders of Aquasco," whose gospel recordings are a permanent part of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. As a man of many talents, he began his career at Grimes IGA and continued employment over the years at Southern MD Electric Company, Grand Union Warehouse, and ARA Shipping Company. He concluded his career as a Pneumatic Tube Mechanic at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., until retirement in 2000. He was an outdoorsman, a jack of all trades, greatly involved in the community, enjoyed playing baseball and was a diehard Washington Redskins fan. He always found time to coach little league baseball and was active with the cub scouts.
He leaves to cherish his memories: devoted wife of 50 years, Louise Curry Contee; sons and daughter, Sidney Contee, Jr., Lucinda McIntosh, Tyrone Williams, Mark Wright; brother, Ralph Contee; sisters, Lula Hawkins, Gladys Adams, Betty Jackson, Dorothy Sebourne; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and host of other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Sidney's Life will be 11 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2016 with visitation of family and friends from 9-11 a.m., at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Pine Lakes Parkway South, Palm Coast, Rev. Edwin Coffie, pastor. Pastor Tyrone Ferrell, of Circumcision of the Heart Ministries, officiating. Interment will be in Daytona Memorial Park, 1425 Bellevue Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL.
