December 30, 1927 – November 22, 2020
Roscoe Wesley Stevenson, 92, of Palm Coast, entered the sunset of life on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at AdventHealth Stuart F Meyer Hospice, Palm Coast. A native of Philadelphia, PA., he was the son of Eugene Stevenson and Carrie Clark Stevenson, born on Friday, December 30, 1927. He was educated in the Philadelphia Public School District and subsequently enlisted into the U. S. Coast Guard. Stewart Mate 1 st Class Stevenson earned the World War II Victory medal before being honorably discharged on May 6, 1947. Following his military service, he relocated to New York City, where he met Shirley Simmons and became the father of his son, Hassan Stevenson, and stepfather to daughter, Dawn Jeffery. While in New York, he held a variety of interesting occupations such as bricklayer, construction worker, taxi driver, window washer of skyscrapers, and limousine chauffeur.
In 1989, Roscoe met and married Yvette Octavia Knighton and he became stepfather to her son, Ahkai Franklin. Roscoe and his wife moved to Palm Coast in 2009 and joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast, under Pastor Edwin Coffie. He was a member of the Joseph Tribe, under Deacon Clay Simpson; he joyfully served in the Hospitality Ministry, the Security Ministry and the Nursing Home Ministry. He also enjoyed ministering to the youth at Vacation Bible School. He loved the LORD. Roscoe was known for his "quick wit" and outgoing personality. He enjoyed listening to jazz, playing chess, and of course reading the Bible.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his older brother, Arletty Stevenson.
To cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife , Yvette Knighton; 2 sons , Hassan Stevenson, Ahkai Franklin; daughter , Dawn Jeffery; 2 daughters-in-law, Mercedes Stevenson, Zulay Oyarvide; 6 grandchildren, Shay, Sky, Tameir, Harper, Janielle, Kayah; 4 great- grandchildren , Ariel, Christian, Maxwell, Emily; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, family and friends.
In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines (including required masks) a socially-distanced visitation of will be from 10-11 a.m., and a Celebration of Life (with the U.S. Coast Guard conducting honors) will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 1 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Pine Lakes Pkwy, Palm Coast, Reverend Edwin Coffie, M.Div., Pastor officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m., in the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
