Obituary

Dr. Robert Alexander Sewell, Jr., 70, of Jacksonville, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville. Dr. Robert Alexander Sewell, Jr. was born on Monday, March 21, 1955, in Raleigh, North Carolina to Robert Alexander Sewell, Sr. and Doris Rickenbacker.

Robert was a proud graduate of William M. Raines High School, Class of 1972. He went on to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU), where he was a member of the distinguished Marching 100 and the Brass Ensemble. He was a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi (national honorary band fraternity) and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Robert held an enduring love for music, especially the soulful, thunderous rhythms of the Marching 100—a passion that would shape his life's rhythm and inspire generations to come.

From a young age, Robert's life was marked by leadership and trailblazing spirit. He was one of the first Black Pages to serve in the Florida Legislature from Duval County and was honored to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout—the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America.

A devoted member of Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, Robert served faithfully as Chairman of the Trustee Board and as a member of the Presbyterian Men's Organization. His faith guided his service and leadership in every arena he entered.

Robert's professional journey was as dynamic as his character. After earning his degree from FAMU, he began his career with Seaboard Coast Line Railroad (now CSX), where he worked as a designer and engineer modifying freight rail cars. He later served as Vice President of Marketing for Citibank's Cardmember Services division, Associate Athletic Director at FAMU, and as a Career Source Consultant in South Florida. He earned his doctoral degree from Grand Canyon University —a testament to his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement. Throughout his life, he exemplified excellence and adaptability in every endeavor.

Above all, Robert cherished his family. He was a devoted father to Kesha, Robert III, and Adrienne; and a proud grandfather to Aaliyah, Jaimie, and Ariana. He shared enduring and lifelong friendships with both Regina Hagans, the mother of his children, and Gwendolyn Sewell, a cherished and life-long friend til the end. Their continued presence in his life was a testament to the deep respect, shared history and unbreakable bonds that transcend time.

He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, perseverance, and joy. Whether through the cadence of a halftime show, the wisdom of a family story, or the quiet strength of his example, Robert moved through the world with music in his soul and love in his heart.

He was preceded in eternal rest by his father: Robert Alexander Sewell, Sr.; mothers: Doris R. Trezevant, Mary B. Sewell; grandmother: Berta Rickenbacker; sisters: Valarie A. Sewell and Beverly Dawson; son: Robert A. Sewell, III.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a loving brother, father, and friend who was steady in his wisdom, generous in his laughter, and true to his word.

Those who treasure his legacy: daughters: Kesha and Adrienne; brothers: Rodney (Wanda), James (Theresa), Omari Garland and Robert "Rob" Allen; sister: Angela (Earl); and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, who were touched by his guidance, humor, and unwavering support.
