Rebecca "Becky" Hughes Douglas, 82, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Palatka Health Care Center following an extended illness. A native and longtime resident of Palatka, she was the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. Joseph Douglas "J.D." Hughes, Sr. and Hannah "Sallie" (Brown) Hughes, born on Friday, October 24, 1930. She was baptized at an early age at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church under her father's pastoral leadership. She was a 1947 graduate of Central Academy High School and subsequently attended Florida Memorial College in St. Augustine. While attending college she met and married Eddie Edwards, and in 1949 they were united in marriage and relocated to Ft. Lauderdale. Upon returning to Palatka, she renewed her membership with Greater Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and served as a very astute Sunday School Teacher, BYPU Teacher, Home Missions secretary, Deaconess Ministry, Choir and VBS Director, Fellowship Hall facilitator. She also served as secretary of the Women's Auxiliary of East Florida Bethany Baptist Association. In 1985 she was united in marriage to Willard Douglas. She served faithfully as a Laundry Services Supervisor at Rodeheaver's Boys' Ranch for many years. Rebecca lived her entire life according to God's word. She helped everyone, family friend or foe, giving encouragement and an attentive listening ear. Rebecca met no stranger. She deeply loved everyone and everyone loved her back. This was the defining portrait of her infectious personality. She reached out to the sick and shut-in with her own version of "meal on wheels", at her own expense. She worked hard to support her family and did not hesitate to share what she had. She possessed a "gift of caring", which will always be remembered by grand-children and numerous nieces, nephews and kids in her community In addition to her parents and husbands, she is preceded in eternal rest by her brothers, Joseph Douglas, Hughes Jr. Dea. Denart Hughes, Rev. Buster Hughes, and Dea. Idus Hughes; sisters, Sarah Jones, Mattie Hughes, Cleotha Cain, and Jennie Hughes.
