Obituary

Otis Singleton, Sr., 89, of St. Augustine, entered the sunset of life on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Memorial Hospital-Pembroke, Pembroke Pines, FL. A native of Ridgeland, SC., he resided in St. Augustine for over 80 years. He was born on Thursday, February 28, 1924 to Walter & Carrie (Youmans) Singleton and was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran serving in the 955th Quartermaster Service Company and honorably discharged on December 24, 1945. Subsequently, he took a carpentry class at Florida Memorial College. In 1947, he was united in marriage to his sweetheart, the former Henrietta Deloach and they remained united for 55 years until her demise. He was entrepreneur of Singleton's Landscaping and Firewood and was a metal recycler. He was a longtime member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, serving in numerous ministries including, Trustee Board (Chairman), Usher Board, Sunday School, and lead member of the Church renovation project. He was known for his positive Christian example, sense of humor and being a social butterfly. His hobbies were collecting, sharing military experiences, and spending time with family and friends, especially attending family reunions. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his sons, Bishop Amos Murray and Otis Singleton, Jr.; grandson, Darren Murray; son-in-law, Richard Johnson; daughter-in-law, Delois Murray. Cherishing his memories: sons & daughters, Deacon John (Susie) Murray, Ormond Beach; Mary Johnson, Early Branch, SC; Hattie (Joe) Wilkerson; Evangelist Elijah (Bernice) Murray, both of Hilton Head, SC; Barbara Ann Singleton, Miramar, FL; daughter-in-law, Pastor Rutha Murray, Palatka; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; godsons, Michael Jordan James and Deacon Charles Rowe, both of St. Augustine; John Wesley, Jr., Oxnard, CA; goddaughters, Tumekia Levette Morgan, Mabel Johnson, Kendria Nelson, and Trencess Wilkins, all of St. Augustine, and a host of nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; other relatives and friends. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 7; Homegoing Celebration: 1 p.m., Saturday, June 8 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 833 Pearl Street, St. Augustine, FL., Reverend Roosevelt Pinckney, pastor is the eulogist. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, St. Augustine.
