Obituary

Olivia Boggs West, 79, of Jacksonville, former Palatka resident, transitioned to be with her blessed Saviour on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at St. Vincents Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL.

Olivia was the seventh of eight children born to Otis Jacob and Bessie (Thompson) Boggs on Thursday, May 22, 1930 in Liberty County, GA. She was a graduate of the Evans County (Claxton, GA) High School. Olivia attended one year of college and in the early 1950s moved to Miami. While residing in Miami and perfecting her musical talents within numerous gospel-singing groups, she met Cary A. West of the famous Singing Sons. On October 25, 1956 they married and subsequently relocated to Newark, NJ., where they resided for 22 years and in 1977, returned to his hometown, Palatka. Mama was a former cashier at Huntley Brothers Supermarket and later K-Mart in the camera and jewelry department from 1980 until she retired in 1995. While in Newark NJ., in 1963 she received the gift of the Holy Ghost at the Way of the Cross Church of Our Lord, where she served faithfully. In Palatka, she was a loyal member of the Refuge Church of Our Lord under the leadership of the late Bishop John McNair and later Elder Derrick Roberts. In 2003, she relocated to Jacksonville and served at the Greater Refuge Temple Church of our Lord Jesus until her Lord and Master called her to her eternal home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her husband, Cary A. West (May 3, 2009); Brothers, Roland, Eleroe, Purley, and Carl Boggs; Sisters, Edna Boggs, Ruby Boggs, and Julia Boggs-Levant.

She leaves to cherish her legacy of love: Daughters, Cara L. (Joseph) Jackson, Jacksonville; Cynthia Lorraine West, Miami; grandchildren, Tammara Lewis, Miami; Demetra Blakely and Christopher Scott, both of Jacksonville; 1 Great Grand daughter, Jaz-mein Ojetunde, Miami; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lucille W. Maxwell, Atlanta, GA., Charlie Mae West, Iona West, Darletha Boggs, Miami; Loretha W. (Rev. Ezekiel) Johnson and John West, Palatka; Marvie W. (Nathan) Allen, East Palatka; Bernice Washington, Daytona Beach; Willie James (Mamie) Johnson, Warner Robbins, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday with a Memorial Service 6-7 p.m. at the Chapel of Serenity.

Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 5 at Greater Refuge Temple Church of our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, 1317 Rowe Avenue, Jacksonville, FL with visitation two hours prior to services. Apostle Gentle L. Groover Sr., Presiding Bishop is the Eulogist.

Interment will follow in the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
