Obituary

Mother Mylissil Alexander Coffie, 97, of Palm Coast (longtime resident and "Community Pillar" of Belle Glade), peacefully entered the sunset of life on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice Care Center, Palm Coast. The daughter of James and Mattie (Jones) Alexander, she was born on Sunday, April 11, 1920 in Georgetown, (Quitman County) GA. In 1965, she relocated to Belle Glade, FL. She united in holy matrimony to the Reverend Edwin L. Coffie, Sr. Together, they owned and operated Coffie's Dry Cleaners and Laundry.

Her extraordinary work and life was not only recognized by the young men she cared for, but the community in which she lived. It was common place to see her sharing with young men and women throughout the Belle Glade community. She is on record as having opened her home as a service provider to over 200 children during her tenure. Licensed as a foster parent in 1970, Mrs. Coffie served faithfully for nearly 30 years. Known for her soft spoken, yet firm demeanor, she was highly respected and admired for her commitment and kindness in helping adolescent boys, who otherwise would have no place to go. She instilled the value of knowing God, working hard, and pursuing education. Mother Coffie retired from being a foster care provider in early 2000, but continued to assist anyone in need.

Mother Coffie lived by the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Her life personified this biblical teaching in the work she did in caring for children, as well as assisting others in the Belle Glade community. She was known for helping children that others had refused and challenged us all "If we say we are followers of Him [Christ] we must love everybody and reach out and help people." Her favorite pastimes included managing a terrace vegetable garden, reading the Word of God, and reminding everyone of the importance of prayer. She was also known for her homemade biscuits. In 2013, Mrs. Coffie became a resident of Palm Coast, Florida residing with her eldest son Rev. Edwin Coffie Jr. and family. She continued to touch lives with her spirit, smile and witty personality. Her presence continued to influence all those who met her. She continued to visit her beloved city, Belle Glade until health issues restricted her ability to travel.

In addition to her parents and husband of 18 years, she was preceded in eternal rest by one son, Mark Williams, Sr. and her two brothers and four sisters: James, Jr., Ezekiel, Lola, Verna, Alice and Edna.

She leaves to cherish her memories: loving sons, Reverend Edwin Coffie, Jr., Palm Coast; Terrance L. Coffie, New York; Kharyl J. Coffie, Belle Glade; daughters-in-law, Carol Love Coffie; Carolyn Williams; Estelle Davis; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
