Mildred Selena Pope Jackson, 79, of St. Augustine, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Bailey Family Center for Caring in St. Augustine following a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of St. Johns County, she was born in Vermont Heights on Saturday, March 12, 1932 to Joseph and Rosa (Woods) Pope. She was a 1950 graduate of Excelsior High School. On July 31, 1951, she was united in marriage to Edward William Billy Jackson. She was a former longtime member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she served as choir president under the leadership of the late Rev. C. C. Rawls and subsequently united with Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Sidney Hardy, Sr. She was a loyal, longtime teachers aide in the St. Johns School District for over 29 years, commencing in 1965 at Richard J. Murray High School, serving Switzerland Point Middle School and retiring in 1994 from Otis A. Mason Elementary School. She was also a member of the former "People Helping People" Choir. Mildreds favorite hobbies included sewing, playing bingo, and watching comedies (she especially loved watching Judge Alex.) In addition to her parents and husband, Mildred was preceded in eternal rest by her sisters, Ethel Lee Taylor and Evelyn Pope; brothers, William Pope, Jerome Pope, James Pope and John Pope. To cherish her memories: beloved daughters and son: Patrell Pat Jackson Banks, Linda Jackson, Norma Miller and Alvin (Annie) Jackson, all of St. Augustine; sisters: Margaret Murray, Armstrong; Christine Bryson, Islip, NY; Fannie Pope, St. Augustine; and Betty Pope, Elkton; 7 grandchildren: Shelley (James)Hatcher, Alvin Jackson, Jr., Andre Scott, Daphne Jackson, Collin Jackson, Wendell Jackson & Natalie Blacknall; 10 great grandchildren: Devaughne, Janay, Latrena, Trevaughn, Keara, Tyrese, Jamie, Jazzhir, Dimena & Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 222 Riberia Street, St. Augustine. Homegoing Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 1, at the Family Worship Center, 2040 State Road 207, St. Augustine. Pastor Sidney Hardy, Sr., is the eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery, 712 S. Palm Avenue, Palatka.
