Maxine Vera Holmes Grandma Gibson, 85, of Palm Coast (formerly Green Cove Springs), entered the sunset of life on Friday, May 28 at her residence. She was a native of Palatka but was a lifelong resident of Green Cove Springs, born July 10,1924. The daughter of Willie and Lottie Mae Holmes, she was educated in the Clay County School System and a graduate of Dunbar High School. At an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour and she was baptized in the St. Johns River. She was a loyal, longtime member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Green Cove Springs. In 2003, she moved to Palm Coast with her granddaughter, Carol Love Coffie and she united with her family at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast under the Pastoral Guidance of her grandson, Pastor Edwin Coffie.
Over the years she served as a faithful Stewardess and was affiliated with the Womens Missionary Society, Order of Eastern Star, and Huff Memorial Club. Grandma as she was affectionately known, had a passion for cooking and spending time with her loving family.
Mrs. Gibson was preceded in eternal rest by her beloved parents; Husband, Willie Gibson; Children, James Gaskins, Wilma Gibson Love and Willie James Gibson Sister, Edith Peacock; Brother, Robert Holmes.
Her legacy of labor and love remains with: daughters-In-Law: Linda F. Gibson and Dorothy Gaskins, Jacksonville; son-In-Law, Joe W. Love, Orange Park; Sister, Willie Mae Phelps, St. Augustine; Grandchildren, Carol Love (Rev. Edwin) Coffie, Palm Coast; Byron Love, Collondra Gibson (Travis) Reese; Michael (Dorthea) Gaskins, all of Jacksonville; Bryan Love, Kingsland, GA; Michelle Gaskins (Dr. Alton) Greene; Kim Gaskins and Alex Presha, all of Atlanta, GA and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 4 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, 549 North Palmetto Avenue, Green Cove Springs, Pastor Charles Jones, eulogist. The Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast, 75 Pine Lakes Parkway South, Palm Coast, Pastor Edwin Coffie, eulogist.
The family will gather at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Green Cove Springs at 10 a.m. Monday, June 7 for final interment.
