Obituary

Mavis "Ma Mavis" Taylor, 72, of Palatka, answered her heavenly call on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at her residence. A native of Nassau, Bahamas, she was the daughter of Harriette Clarke and Morgan Brice, born on Saturday, December 4, 1948. Mavis was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Mr. & Mrs.  Jonathan Taylor, and was reared in Delray Beach. Mavis was educated in Palm Beach County School District at Carver High School.

Mavis worked various jobs throughout her young life. She worked at Powerline Factory, Ready Nurses where she performed private duty. For many years she worked at Edison Court Community Center in Miami for the Housing Authority which was her most passionate job. She would go the extra mile to ensure the residents' needs were met. She was a committed resident advocate which suited her servant's heart and she received numerous awards, letter from Congress of the United States House of Representatives, and United State Senate for her dedicated work with HUD.

She moved to Palatka and united with Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, where she served in the church's Senior ministry. "Ma Mavis" loved to share with her community and she organized the "Chew & Chat" ministry group, where she encouraged spiritual growth through inspirational prayers and devotionals.

She was an amazing ambassador who served people! She had a vivacious personality. Some may have thought she was quiet, but she was strictly business and did not bite her tongue. She made friends everywhere she went. "Ma Mavis" loved to love on people and make them laugh. She also was a master of cooking which was her favorite past time.

She was a dedicated mother first and foremost of 4 wonderful children: son , Martin (Tamika) Taylor; 3 daughters , Annette (Eugene) Mitchell, Cynthia (Gerald) Lewis, and Joyce (Granvill) Hunt. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as grandma of 16: Brandon (Shayna), Byran, Benjamin, LaDarius, LaHazel, Marquez, Aniyah, Jarvis, Joniese, Jordan, Javon, Jamal, Anitra, Cadarrell, Rodney & Kamari and great grandmother of 5; also cherishing her memories: brother , Joseph (Charnita) Taylor; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and special friends; adopted daughter , Minister Ruth James, adopted granddaughter (caregiver) , Blanche Torrance and her true friend , Vernadine Robinson; and 5 godchildren whom she lifted up in prayer daily and a host of relatives and friends, including friends of the Chew & Chat; faithful, devoted neighbor, Sammy Brown.

In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines including required masks with social distancing, a visitation of family and friends will be from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration of "Ma Mavis" will commence at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 14 at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Rev. Karl N. Flagg, Senior Pastor, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery, Palatka.
