IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mattie Ruth
Lewis
December 16, 1937 – May 18, 2023
Mattie Ruth McIntosh Lewis was born in Hahira, GA on Thursday, December 16, 1937, to George and Callie McIntosh. She was the 6th born of 14 children in the McIntosh family. The family's home was in Quitman, GA. Because of the need for family survival, she got her primary education in the Quitman School District (Georgia). During her early years, she began her career as a nanny. The family also spent their early years traveling on the migrant worker circuit with families from San Mateo where they spent most of the 60's and early 70's traveling to various states to work. She was joined in holy matrimony with Roosevelt Lewis of Live Oak, FL and together they raised six children. She and her husband, Roosevelt became labor contractors, where she spent her remaining working years hiring family and friends traveling state to state. She was married to Roosevelt for 33 years until his earthly transition in 1989. She was a true believer in the phrase: "It takes a village to raise a child"." She didn't mind cooking and sharing with the community. When word spread that she was cooking,
everyone in the village would show up to eat. One of her favorite dishes was her "Mac and Cheese". She was high on religion, she made sure that all her kids went to church every Sunday and that everyone knew how to live off the land. One of her favorite things to do other than cooking was fishing. . San Mateo was home until Roosevelt preceded her in 1989. She continued to work and remained independent until she lost her sight in 2009 after heart surgery. Her faith in God and positive nature kept her with a strong mind and memory of life's events. She enjoyed talking about "the good ole days". It was a joy for her to talk with family and friends about the times when life was a struggle, but the times were good. Her laughter and
the ability to recall events kept everyone's attention and we learned about families that had long passed. She was a member of San Mateo 2nd Mt. Tabor Baptist Church of San Mateo and later became a Church Mother of Christ Witness Church of Palatka.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mattie Ruth was preceded in eternal rest by her siblings, Robert McIntosh, George McIntosh, Bryant Lee, Pasco McIntosh, Eddie Lee, Willie McIntosh, Odessa Denson,
Annie Lou Gilyard, Mamie Lee Gilyard, Georgia Mae Golden, Annette McIntosh; daughter, Rose McGee; and daughter in law, Wanda Yvette Lewis; grandchildren, Thomas McKinnon, Curtis Lewis, Tyhesia Washington, Bashay McKinnon; mother in law, Sarah Holsey.
Mattie Ruth Lewis entered eternal rest at 3:16pm on Thursday, May 18, 2023, while residing with one of her sons in Hephzibah, GA.
