Mattie Odessa Hughes, 89, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Friday, June 4 2010 at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. The daughter of Joseph Douglas Hughes, Sr. and Hannah Sally Brown, she was a native of Hawkinsville, Georgia and a long time resident of Palatka, born August 18, 1920.

She was educated in the Putnam County School District and attended Central Academy High School. She was a retired homemaker, formerly employed by Checkerboard Feed Store. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, and fishing.

In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in eternal rest by: brothers, J.D. Hughes, Jr., Dea. Dennard Hughes, Rev. Buster Hughes, Sr., Deacon Idus I.D. Hughes; sisters, Jennie Hughes & Sarah Jones.

She leaves to cherish her legacy of love: son and daughter-in-law, Willie F. (Linda) Bartley, Green Cove Springs, brother, C.L. Hughes, Palatka; two sisters, Cleota Cain, Jacksonville and Rebecca Douglas, Palatka; 10 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday (Today) June 11, at The Chapel of Serenity. Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 395 Alabama Avenue, Palatka, Rev. Michael McKay, Pastor. Rev. Robert L. Wright, pastor of Greater Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Green Cove Springs, is the eulogist.
