Mattie Mae Evans Burley, 77, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Friday, January 31, 2014, at her residence following an extended illness. A native of West Point, Mississippi, she was born on Sunday, February 9, 1936 to Todd & Alice (Brown) Evans. She was educated in the Clay County Mississippi Public School System. On June 4, 1972, Mattie was united in Holy Matrimony to Willie Burley. She was a member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Mattie was a retired housekeeper after 18 years of employment at the V. A. Medical Center in Miami and subsequently in Gainesville. She enjoyed gardening and solving crossword puzzles. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in eternal rest by her sister, Susie Lee Evans; brothers, John Taylor, James Taylor, and Todd Evans. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Gail Evans, Miami; Betty Evans, Palatka; Barbara Burley, Lenexa, KS; son, Benjamin Burley, Sr., Palatka; grandchildren, Sonya Kemp-Donald, Quincy Doy, Edison Hill, Jr, Jiovanna Evans, Johnnie Evans, Tysha Foster, Benjamin Burley, Jr., Antonia Turner; great-grandchildren, Brittany Kemp, Keyondra Donald, Malik Hill, Jennika Hill, Elisha Donald, Jennicia Hill, Anyyah Hill, Variya Davis, Zyonna Davis; brother, Willie Taylor, Palatka; sisters, Ada Valentine, Columbus, MS, Carrenda Hilton, Miami, Lillie Ann Pertty, Miami Gardens; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Visitation of family and friends will be held 5-8 p.m., Friday, February 7 at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8 at Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 1000 North 19th Street, Palatka, Reverend Anthony Q. Robinson, Sr., Pastor, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill East Cemetery, Palatka.
