Mary Alice Stamper Singleton, 86, longtime resident of East Palatka, peacefully entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at her residence. The daughter of J.D. and Novella (Sumersett) Stamper, she was a native of Blakely, GA, born on Tuesday, April 30, 1929. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Bethune-Cookman College. While at Bethune-Cookman, she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She later earned a Master's Degree from Nova University. On July 22, 1955, Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to James Carl "J.C." Singleton in Folkston, GA. Mary dedicated her life's work as a passionate educator in the Putnam County School District for 34 years, where she positively influenced the lives of her 1ST and 2ND grade students. She loved children and loved teaching. In 1990, she retired from teaching, and used her time enjoying her grandchildren, gardening, quilting, and volunteering in the community. She was an active, longtime member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in eternal rest by her husband of 54 years, James C. Singleton (January 29, 2010).
Mary is survived by a loving family, including: sons and daughters, Cassandra Singleton (Stephen) Williams, Springfield, MA; Vincent D. (Carol) Singleton, St. Augustine; Daphne R. Singleton, Brooklyn NY; Stephen J. (April) Singleton, Sr., San Mateo; 9 grandchildren, Cynella Cowie, Hartford, CT; Kimberly (Kristopher) Bryson, Richmond, VA; Jessica Singleton, Jacksonville; Michael (Jasamine) Grant, Fort Lauderdale; Kimberly (Chris) Irizzary, Palatka; Stephen, James, Lane, and Brett Singleton, San Mateo; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie (Jimmy) Smith, San Jose, CA; Linda, Oretta, and Zerella Stamper, all of Bradenton; brother, Ronald Stamper, Bradenton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A service of remembrance to celebrate Mrs. Singleton's life will be 11 a.m., Saturday, April 9, at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Her eldest son, Vincent D. Singleton will be officiating. Private interment: Oak Hill West Cemetery.Visits: 0
