Obituary

Mary Merritt Alexander, 82, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Friday, September 4, 2009 at Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Putnam County born Wednesday, March 23, 1927 in Yelvington, FL. The daughter of Cleveland and Carrie (Berry) Merritt, she was educated in the Putnam County School System. Mary was a retired nursing assistant, previously employed at the former Putnam Memorial Hospital. During her early teenage years, she accepted Christ as her Lord and personal Savior under the pastoral leadership of Elder D. R. Berry. Mother Alexander has been a faithful member of Pentecostal Church of God in Christ for over 65 years. She humbly served as a Church Mother, and sang in the church choir. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing. Mother Alexander is preceded in eternal rest by her parents; husband, Jimmy Alexander; daughter, Jeanette Alexander; brothers, Thomas, Arthur, Robert and Johnny Merritt; Sister, Louvenia Dawsey, Gracie Merritt, and Martha King (her twin sister).

To cherish her memories, Daughter, Audrey (James) Noble, Tallahassee; Sons, Jimmy (Gloria) Alexander, Titusville; Richard (Angeline) Alexander, Orange Mills; Robert (Betty) Alexander, Dothan, AL; Allan (Linda) Alexander, East Palatka; Sister, Louella Sanders, East Palatka; sisters-in-law, Vermella Elizabeth Robinson, Rosebud Merritt, Alise Merritt and Eddiemae Merritt; 9 Grandchildren; 11 Great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and caring friends.

Visitation of family & friends will be Friday, September 11, from 5-8 pm at the Chapel of Serenity and 9 -11 am at her church.

Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 12 at Pentecostal Church of God in Christ, 624 N 9th St., Superintendent Johnny Shaw, Pastor is the eulogist. Interment will be in Pattersonville Memorial Cemetery, East Palatka. Friends may sign the Alexander familys guestbook at www.flaggserenitychapel.com. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Karl N. Flagg Serenity Memorial Chapel.
