Obituary

Martha Alveta "Sweet Rose" Nichols was born on Friday, July 15, 1932 in Palatka "Browns Landing," FL.  The daughter of Henry Nichols and Elmore Shannon Nichols, she was the youngest of three children. From the very moment Martha's mother referred to her as "Sweet Rose," it became her lifelong, affectionately, acclaimed nickname.

"Sweet Rose" was educated in the Putnam County School District.  She attended Ms. Elestine C. Fulks' Kindergarten class (located on the corner of 9th and Madison Streets). She was a 1952 graduate of Central Academy High School, where she was a cheerleader and also played on the softball team.  She also attended Boylan-Haven Academy (an all-Girls Boarding School) of Jacksonville.

"Sweet Rose" relocated to New York City, residing in the Bronx and working in Long Island for 16 years, including at the Cold Springs Farm Inn.  She later resided in Jacksonville for 2 years employed at Stockton Nursing Center and at one point she worked for a restaurant at Riverside; and in Miami for 9 years employed at Victoria Nursing Home, Mt. Sinai on Miami Beach and Jacobi Hospitals, respectively.  She subsequently returned to Palatka and enrolled in Santa Fe College in Gainesville, earning her Childhood Development Certification.  She became a Substitute Teacher and a Teacher's Assistant in the Putnam County School District until retirement. Over an extensive career, her occupations included live-in homemaking, certified nursing and teacher's assistant duties.

"Sweet Rose" was a longtime member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, initially under the leadership of the late Rev. James A. Wright and presently under Reverend Anthony Q. Robinson, Sr.   She was a member of Barragan Tri-County Senior Citizens organization. She always enjoyed helping and caring for people. Her hobbies included writing letters, photography (she loved taking pictures), making sweet potato pies for holidays and giving them away as holiday gifts.

"Sweet Rose" always kept in touch with family and friends through cards and letters.  She truly loved Palatka and made it "home sweet home" until she was called from labor to reward.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her brother , Thomas N. Nichols, Sr., sister, Leitha Louise Nichols; grandson, Jerry Price, II; great-grandson, Cameron Cooper; "like a sister" Loretha West Johnson.

Martha Alveta "Sweet Rose" Nichols answered her Heavenly Father's call to come on home and she entered eternal rest on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Putnam Community Medical Center, Palatka.
