Marie Humphrey Adams, 95, of Palatka, peacefully entered the sunset of life on Sunday, March 24, 2019 in Palatka surrounded by her family. A native of Hastings, she was the daughter of Ulysess and Lillie Yearty Humphrey, born on Saturday, September 8, 1923. She attended Hastings Vocation School. Marie moved to Jacksonville, and later moved to Newark, NJ. She was an excellent seamstress for a garment company, ultimately sewing and marketing her designs to a broad spectrum of customers, including the Mayor's wife. Along her journey, she helped many of her relatives make a fresh start by opening her NJ residence to them. She also resided in St Petersburg and Gainesville, prior to coming to Palatka. Over the years, she faithfully served the Lord at Traveler's Rest Baptist Church (St. Petersburg); Second Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church (Gainesville); and Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church (Palatka).
Marie was a loving wife, devoted sister, aunt and a caring friend to many. Marie's transition represented the end of her generation. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in eternal rest by her brothers , Ulysess Humphrey, Jr., Amos Humphrey; sisters , Juanita Smith, Mattie Johnson, and Myrtle Humphrey (her twin sister); nieces Ernestine Humphrey, Cynthia Humphrey-Fitz, Shirley Saunders and Elvera Mitchell; nephews , Johnny Hatten, Amos Jerome Humphrey, Ernest Smith and George Taylor.
She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted nieces and nephews, Ollie St. Clair ,Tallahassee; Elouise (Rev. James) Sloan, Crescent City; Betty Scott, Doris Humphrey, Palatka; Judy Ellington, Sylvia (Harold) Felder, Hastings; Cecelia Pasha, Newark, NJ; Rev. Leon Hatten, East Orange, NJ; Charles (Mamie) Smith, White Springs; Ulysess (Phyllis) Humphrey, III Durham, NC; Warren (Catherine) Smith, Federal Point; Bernard (Carolyn) Smith, West Palm Beach; Seabron (Allyson) Smith, Lake Worth; eldest great niece, Marilyn (Frank) Barnes, Clermont, and a host of great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews; loving cousins, Katie Davis, Florida King (Bobby) and Pearlie Mae Turner; f riends, Victoria Hawkins , St. Petersburg; Alice Foreman, Gainesville; Yvonne Johnson, Palatka; and a host of other caring relatives and friends.
