Mamie Jane Gran Shelton, 74, of Crescent City, entered the sunset of life to enter the sunrise of eternity, in the evening of Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center. Her earthly mission was completed with victory. A native of Camilla, GA., she was born on Saturday, May 1, 1937 (the youngest of six children) to Prince Albert Edmond and Eva Wimberly. She was educated in the Mitchell County GA., School System. On August 16, 1954, she was united in holy matrimony to Leroy Shelton in Fitzgerald, Georgia and they became proud parents of 2 daughters, Alberta and Claretha. Baptized at an early age, she was a former member Haybeckal Baptist Church in Fitzgerald, Georgia. In 1957, the family moved to Crescent City, Florida and joined Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Mothers Board. She was a devoted homemaker previously employed by Phillip Hunter Fernery and was a formerly affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star and Heroines of Jericho. Mother Shelton was very out-spoken, never met a stranger, and loved family cookouts. Her greatest joy in life was the warmth and love of her family, nurturing and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren and their friends grow into adulthood.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her beloved husband of 50 years, Deacon Leroy Shelton; daughter, Claretha Shelton; granddaughter: Ywanda Meka Oxendine; sisters and brothers: Charlie Mae Gilbert, Lucille Edmond, Ardie C. Edmond, and Jimmy F. Edmond.
Those who will forever cherish her memories: loving daughter; Alberta Shelton, Crescent City; brother; Willie A. (Ruby) Edmond, Camilla, GA; adopted son, David Wright, Newport, VA; adopted daughter, Diane Wright, Sanford; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a host of godchildren, other relatives and caring friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Serenity and from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, November 19, at her church. Homegoing Celebration will be 10 a.m. at New Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1227 Old Highway 17, Crescent City, Reverend Brian C. Thomas, pastor. Reverend E.L. Yorker, Sr., pastor of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Daytona Beach is the eulogist.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Crescent City.
