Mable Lee Hughes McCoy, 83, longtime resident of Jacksonville (native of Palatka), entered the sunset of life on Monday, December 20, 2021 at Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville. The daughter of Cleota Hughes Cain and Jim H. Hopkins, Sr., she was born on Friday, July 29, 1938 in Palatka, Florida. Mable was educated in the Putnam County School District and was a 1956 graduate of Central Academy High School. She earned an associate's degree from St. Johns Community College; Bachelor's degree in Early Elementary Education from Florida Memorial College, and a Master's degree from the University of North Florida. Mable retired after 30 years as an educator in the Duval County Public Schools.
She was a loyal member of St. Matthew Baptist Church for 53 years. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Youth Department / Adult Department Superintendent, Youth Counselor, Vacation Bible School Teacher, and member of the Adult Choir and Outreach Program for the Elderly.
Her hobbies included solving word search puzzles, sewing, watching sports, (NBA, NFL, etc.), traveling (she liked to be on the go), and loved spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Mable was preceded in eternal rest by her husband, Samuel "Sam" McCoy (December 2, 2021); sons, Michael A. Hughes, Samuel McCoy, Jr., Jeffrey A. McCoy; grandson, Kim "Desi" Varner; sisters, Ruthie Mae Hughes, Naomi Hughes; brother, James A. Cain.
She leaves to cherish her memories: son, Darryl (Lawanda) McCoy, Jacksonville; daughters, Joy Varner, Jacksonville; Judy (Wayne) Snow, Edmond, OK; daughter-in-law, Tracy McCoy, Jacksonville; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Louis (Nancy) Cain, Jr., Terrance (Gail) Cain, Jim H. Hopkins, Jr.; sisters, Gwendolyn Crane, Annette Cain, Patricia Cain, Brenda (Ben) Titus, Jacquelyn Johnson, Rosalind (Adrian) Williams, Margaret H. Harris; brother-in-law, James (Pastor Sheila) McCoy; sisters-in-Law: Pastor Cathy S. McCoy; Pamela S. Cain; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
