Lugene Colson Word, 71, of Palatka entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville. She was a native of Douglas GA, born Monday, March 21, 1938 to Standfield and Alma (Herring) Colson. She was educated in the Coffee County, GA School District, later moving to Putnam County. She has been a resident of Palatka since 1947. She was a faithful member of the H. T. Christian Center where she served on the Mothers Board. She really enjoyed serving the Lord, cooking and sharing family time together with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In 1994, Lugene retired as a machine operator in the tissue-converting department at Georgia-Pacific where she was employed for over 27 years. She fought a good fight, she kept the faith, and she finished her course. Lugene is preceded in eternal rest by her parents; brother, Michael Colson; paternal grandparents, Kiby and Dolly Colson; and maternal grandparents, Amos and Lucretia Herring.

To cherish her memories: Her loving children, Patrica Colson, Barbara Colson, Ronnie (Angela) Passmore, Gloria Simmons, Cheran Wilford, Samuel (Bertha) Passmore, Tina Roberts, and Kenneth (Jamica) Passmore, all of Palatka; Corinthians (Shonda) Passmore, Fort Lee, VA; Karen Word, Brian (Maxine) Word, both of Gainesville; Mark Word, Sacramento, CA; and Lisa (Lawrence) Brown, Palatka; Sister, Vanester Fells, Wilmington, DE; 28 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; Devoted Caregivers, Tiffany Colson & Jamica Passmore, both of Palatka; and a host of other devoted relatives and friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday January 22 at The Chapel of Serenity. Homegoing Celebration will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 23rd at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Ave Palatka. Pastor Rutha M. Murray, of H.T. Christian Center is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery.
