Lucille West Maxwell, 90, of Riverdale, GA., (longtime Palatka resident) entered the sunset of life on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Southern Regional Medical Center, Riverdale, GA. The daughter of William "Ruff" and Corene (Gavin) West, she was a native of Palatka, born on Wednesday, February 2, 1927. She attended public schools of Putnam County, graduating from Central Academy High School. In 1945, Lucille was united in marriage to Alphonso Maxwell and they became the proud parents of six children: Joyce, Jacqueline, Donald, Ronald, Cedric and Reginald.
She continued her pursuit of education at Florida Normal College, St. Augustine, subsequently following her dream by earning her Bachelor's degree in Education from Florida Memorial University and her Master's degree from Nova University. She truly loved her teaching career in education, educating young students to become their best from October 18, 1961 to January 17, 1992 at James A. Long and William D. Moseley Elementary Schools, respectively. She retired from the Putnam County School District with 30+ years of meritorious service.
At an early age she was baptized and joined the West family's church, Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She later united with Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, and served the Lord faithfully and was on the Trustee Ministry until she moved to Georgia. Upon relocating to Georgia, she became a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church of East Point. L:ucille was a good steward, always helping and doing whatever she could with her time, talents and treasure. She loved fishing, traveling and reading. She loved playing and entertaining all her children both young and old.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her son, Ronald Harry Maxwell; brothers, William "Nebo" Jr., Carey, Joe, Nathaniel, James "JC" Carl, and John West; sisters, Winnie Williams and Ella Mae Lewis.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters and sons, Joyce L. Maxwell, Jacqueline C. Maxwell, Donald L. Maxwell, Cedric B. (Patricia) Maxwell, Reginald G. Maxwell; 19 grandchildren; sisters, Loretha (Rev. Ezekiel) Johnson, Marvie (Nathan) Allen; brother, Willie James Johnson; special friend, Earl Marshall; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m., Friday, June 30 at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 10 a.m., Saturday, July 1, at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Rev. Karl N. Flagg, Senior Pastor is the eulogist. Rev. Anthony Q. Robinson, Sr., pastor of Greater Shiloh, presiding. Interment will be in Palatka Memorial Gardens.
