Obituary

Lillie Belle Granger-Jones, 86, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born Friday, November 17, 1922 in Tallahassee, Florida as the second child of Willie Granger, Sr. and Fannie Cohen Granger. She was educated in the public school system of Duval and Putnam Counties, graduating from Central Academy High School, class of 1942. Following graduation, she attended Bethune - Cookman College in Daytona Beach for two years. In 1950, she relocated to Jacksonville, and was united in marriage to James Bossard, and to this union, on son Michael was born. She later moved to New York City where she was employed at the Rockland Palace, Choc-full of Nuts and Smalls Paradise. In 1954, she returned to Palatka where she began working with her parents in their family owned restaurant, Grangers Caf. She was a Certified Professional Food Service Manager. Following the demise of her parents, she became the restaurants owner-operator and continued to serve the communitys dining needs. Grangers Caf also prepared and served meals for the Palatkas City Jail until they merged with the newly constructed Putnam County facility. Belle Granger as she was widely known, was a longtime member of Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church where she served as the former president of Food Service Ministry and was on the Senior Usher Board. She had a reputation for feeding the homeless and hungry throughout the community. The end of an era in the restaurant business came in 1989, although she swiftly realized that she wasnt ready for retirement. She began to use her talents to serve numerous employers and was recipient of numerous civic and community awards. She was preceded in eternal rest by her parents; Brother, Willie Junior Granger, Jr., Sisters, Willie Mae Shivers, Thelma Dinah Lewis, Lucille Red Granger-Lewis, Cecelia Granger, and Delores Granger Smith; niece, Hazel Williams. To cherish her memories: Son, Michael V. Bossard (Palatka), Daughter-in-Law, Nancy D. Bossard (Charleston, S. Carolina) granddaughter, DeMiah (Charleston, S. Carolina) Nephews: Earl J. Hutchinson (Lorene) Washington, D.C., Gerald Lewis (Cynthia) Palatka, Marcus Lewis (Debra) Albany, GA., Ronald Pope, Palatka Nieces: Sandra Lewis, Palatka, Barbara Holland-Simmons, Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Brenda Pope-Hill, Palatka, Beverly Greene (Joseph) Palatka, numerous Grand nephews, Grand nieces, Special relatives, the Mauesby, Nicholson, and Bossard families of Jacksonville, FL., and a host of other special friends and relatives. Visitation of family and friends will be Friday, March 27, from 5-8 p.m. at the Chapel of Serenity. Homecoming Celebration will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Reverend Karl N. Flagg, Pastor, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill East Cemetery.
