Lewis Maxwell, Jr., 73, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. He was a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, born Tuesday, December 2, 1937 to Lewis Maxwell, Sr. & Roberta Pittman Maxwell. Lewis was educated in the Pulaski County Arkansas School System. In 1960, Lewis relocated to Palatka and he united his life with Sarah Graham and they were together for nearly 50 years. Lewis was a pulpwood laborer for over 40 years. Lewis loved his family and was always working. Following retirement, Lewis planted trees and sold fruit and vegetables at a roadside stand. He attended Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. Lewis hobbies included watching television, especially Westerns and Andy Griffith.
Lewis is preceded in eternal rest by his parents; daughter, Eddrina Yaunta Maxwell; and brother, Tommie Lee Maxwell.
To cherish his memories: beloved soulmate of 50 years, Sarah Graham, Palatka; daughter, Towander (Marcus) Roberts, Palatka; Son, John Lewis Maxwell, Palatka; Sisters, Willie Garrison, Youngstown, OH; Lessie Harper, Little Rock; Florine Maxwell, Ida Mae Maxwell, Betty Maxwell, Lucille Strickland, and Doris Maxwell, all of Howardville, MO; Rosa Mary Strickland, Hannibal, MO; Brothers, James Maxwell, FL; Eugene Maxwell, La Forge, MO; Melvin Maxwell and Sydney Maxwell, both of New Madrid, MO; Henry Maxwell, Portageville, MO; 4 grandchildren, MarDrina Roberts, Iyeuna Roberts, and Destiny Roberts, all of Palatka; Tevin Maxwell, Lake City; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Josephine (Bobby) Conyers, Julia Johnson, and Bishop Robert Lucas, all of Palatka; Georgia (Neiman) Griffin, Welaka; Evangelist Angia J. Graham, Deland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and caring friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 14 (today) at Chapel of Serenity. Homegoing Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15, at the Chapel of Serenity. Reverend Clarence Williams, Pastor of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, is the eulogist and Bishop Robert Lucas, presiding.
Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery.
The cortege will assemble on Saturday at 1:20 p.m. at his daughter, Towander Roberts residence, 6110 5th Manor West, Palatka.
