Lessie "Leslie" Tomblin Amos, 72, of Fort Myers, entered the sunset of life on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Fort Myers. The daughter of Sylvester and Maybell (Glass) Tomblin, Sr., she was a native of Hastings, born on Saturday, November 17, 1945. At an early age, she accepted Christ in her life and was a member of The Church of God in Christ and Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church of Hastings and in 1971 became a faithful member of Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Ft. Myers.
She was educated in the St. Johns County School District and was a 1963 graduate of Walter E. Harris High School, Hastings. She continued her pursuit of education at Collier-Blocker Junior College, Palatka; earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education at Florida Memorial College, Miami; and a M.S. degree in Education at Florida A & M University, Tallahassee. In 1970, she was initially employed as a Title 1 Lab Teacher in the Putnam County School District (Crescent City). Upon relocating to Fort Myers in 1971, she became an elementary school teacher in the Lee County School District until retirement. She earned many honors during her distinguished career including Lee County's Teacher of the Year award in 1998. She touched the lives of countless boys and girls during her extensive and distinguished professional career.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her husband, Edward Amos; sister, Cora L. Tomblin; brothers, Benjamin Lewis, Joe Lewis, David Sellers, Willie Merkerson, Henry Green, and Johnnie Tomblin.
She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughters, Nedra M. Amos, Latanya Amos, Fort Myers; sisters, Willie M. James, Dorether L. Hunter, Lillie M. Freeman, Hastings; Ester Mae Alexander, High Springs; Rosa Washington, East Palatka; brothers, Elder Jimmie L. (Doretha) Lewis, Hastings; Simon Lewis, St. Augustine; George Alexander, Hastings; George (Linda) Lewis, Kevin Lewis, Gainesville; Joseph (Gwen) Lewis, Miami; Sylvester (Mary) Tomblin, Jr., North Lauderdale; Wade Tomblin, New Brunswick, NJ; Andrew (Terry) Merkerson, Daytona Beach; Dr. Sammie L. Tomblin, Altamonte Springs; sisters-in-law, Bernice Tomblin, Riviera Beach; Alberta Merkerson, Sanford; Evangelist Retha Lewis, Amityville, NY; devoted cousins, Dorothy Glass Baker, Alma, GA; Mary Burch, St. Augustine; and a host of precious devoted nieces and nephews, many sorrowing friends, classmates and extended family.
Visitation of family and friends will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, April 27 and Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m., Saturday, April 28 at The Lord's Temple, City of Refuge, 140 Gilmore Street, Hastings. Evangelist Dorothea Freeman-Smith, Faith Believing Ministries, Midlothian, TX, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Armstrong Cemetery.
