We celebrate the life of Kate Solomon, born to parents, Samuel and Fannie (Gladman) Isabel on Sunday, December 25, 1921 in Washington, (Wilkes County), Georgia. Subsequently, Kate resided with her parents in Harlem, New York, where they owned and operated a candy store. Kate developed a life-long love of sweets, by feasting on the sweets in the store when she was left in charge. She completed her formal education in Harlem, New York and afterward pursued higher education at the Bronx Community College of New York, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree.
Kate met the love of her life, Harold Solomon, and they were united in marriage for 65 years until he preceded her in eternal rest on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. From this marital union, they became the proud parents of two children, Barbara and Harold. Initially, the family resided in Manhattan, later purchasing homes in Springfield Gardens and Westchester, New York. In 1992, following Kate's retirement, they moved to Palm Coast, Florida to escape the snow and of course, the escalating cost of living. Kate worked all of her life. She began her lifelong career in the New York City Department of Welfare and Social Services, working in the Nursing Home Division, and was ultimately promoted progressively to Assistant Administrator.
Upon relocating to Palm Coast, Kate assisted in the start-up of the First African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Palm Coast. She enjoyed playing bridge and pokeno; loved solving crossword puzzles; doing needlepoint; and she always read the newspaper from cover to cover every single day. Later, she became a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast, where she worked as Financial Secretary, served in the Calvary Cupboard (Pantry), and Usher Ministries. She really enjoyed attending Sunday School and Bible Study, and attended until her diminishing health made it more challenging.
In addition to her parents and husband, Kate was preceded in eternal; rest by her son. She transitioned to eternal rest at 9:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Florida Hospital-Flagler, Palm Coast, Florida.
She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughter, Barbara Solomon, Palm Coast; 3 grandchildren, Kimathi Evans, Kyra Solomon and Chance Solomon; 9 great grandchildren; niece, Francine Blackburne; nephew Reginald Thorne; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast, 75 Pine Lakes Pkwy, Pastor Edwin Coffie, Officiating, with visitation one hour prior.
