Johnnie Lee Wright, 81, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Florida Hospital, Palm Coast. A native of Palatka, she was the daughter of Walter and Johnnie Pearl Wright, born on Wednesday, April 7, 1937. She was a 1955 graduate of Central Academy High School (Home of the "Mighty Bulldogs") and was a majorette and girls' basketball player. She subsequently coached a Palatka City League women's softball team at Booker Park. Johnnie was employed as an Anesthesiologist Assistant at the former Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville (1974-1996). Johnnie accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. While residing in Gainesville, she joined Johnson Chapel Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a former matron of Priscilla Court #296, Heroines of Jericho, Gainesville. Upon retirement, she returned to Palatka to be caregiver for her mother and subsequently assisted her sister at Laura Carter's KinderCare, where she served as a teacher's assistant and cook, taking care of numerous relatives and other beautiful children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her sisters, Walter Lee and Odessa Burgess; brothers, McCoy Wright, Herbert Wright, and James F. Wright, Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughter, Janice B. Wright, Palm Coast; granddaughter, Cal'Meka Holcy (Duan Brown), Palatka; great-grandchildren, Carmen Holcy, Palm Coast; Cassidy and Camelle Brown, both of Palatka; sister, Laura Carter, Palatka; brothers, Reverend Robert L. (Ethel) Wright, Green Cove Springs; Willie (Pearl) Wright, Palatka; godchildren, Kierra Robinson, Palatka; Tiffany Cohens Raines, Jacksonville; "like a daughter," Alisha Kaye, Palm Coast; and a host of other relatives and friends, including special relatives, Earl and Jackie Wilson, Demetrius and Joi Ford, Joa Ford, Bobby Nelson, and Bennie Edwards, all of Fort Lauderdale.
Visitation of family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m., Friday, May 4 at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 5 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 322 North 10th Street, Palatka, Rev. Frederick T. Demps, Pastor. Rev. Chris Lee, Associate Pastor, is the eulogist.
