Obituary

John Singleton, Jr., 77, of St. Augustine, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at Flagler Hospital, St. Augustine. The son of John and Francis Singleton, Sr., he was born on Thursday, March 19, 1942, in Hastings. He was educated in the St. Johns County School District and a 1960 graduate of Richard J. Murray High School, St. Augustine.  In 1965, John earned a B.S. degree in Education and Business Administration at Florida Memorial University, Miami. He pledged and became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.  In 1961, John accepted a 3 rd grade teacher's position in the Putnam County School District at East Palatka Elementary School and Teacher/Coach at Browning-Pearce Elementary School, and subsequently, 5 th grade teacher at H.P. Livingston Elementary School in Duval County. In the mid-1960s, John changed careers and became a licensed insurance agent progressively with Banker's Life and Casualty; Atlanta Life; Afro-American Life; and Atlanta Municipal Fire & Casualty Agency, where he served as district manager and regional manager, respectively. In 1980, he decided to engage in public administration, employed by the Putnam County Community Action Agency. Many years ago, John was a mason affiliated with the former Mt. Horeb Lodge #20 (now J.P. Smith) F. & A.M., Fountain of Youth Elks Lodge #649, St. Augustine. He was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and also served as a Commissioner's Assistant, and earned certifications in human resources, grant writing, grant management through the U.S.D.A. and U.S. Dept. of H.U.D. In his leisure time, he enjoyed farming and writing grants for his friends and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his brothers, Willie Lee and Johnny Lee Singleton; uncle and aunt, William "Bill" and Louise Singleton.

He leaves to cherish his memories: former wife and dear friend, Doris Humphrey, Palatka; together with their four children, Jacqueline (Lewis) Richardson, Gainesville; John (Angela) Singleton, III, Orlando; Adrian (Robin) Singleton, Jacksonville; Andre (Darcy) Singleton, Tampa; 7 grandchildren, Adrein (Kamari) Singleton Sr., Kanisha Singleton, Teonah Singleton, Jaylen Richardson, Jaden and Jayla Singleton, Sebastian Singleton, 2 great-grandchildren, Ki'Mara Ashley, Adrein Singleton, Jr.; brother, Henry (Brenda) Singleton, Port St. Lucie; sister, Jannie (Horace) Young, Jacksonville; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
