IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Walter
Freeman
October 24, 1936 – September 14, 2025
James W. Freeman was born on October 24, 1936, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Jimmy Lee Freeman and Louvenie Broadway (Pittman). Surrounded by his loving family, James peacefully transitioned from this earthly life and entered the presence of his Savior on September 14, 2025, at the age of 88.
Affectionately known as James, Jim, or Jimmy, he was a man of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep integrity. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. Every day of his life was anchored in the Word of God, and his heart was rooted in service to others.
A Life of Learning and Service
James was educated in the Winston-Salem City School System and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Winston-Salem Teachers College—home of the Mighty Rams. He later earned a second Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland.
James started his career as an educator by receiving multiple state teacher's certificates for instruction in Raleigh, N.C. and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In 1961, James began a distinguished military career in the United States Army Reserve, where he earned the Good Conduct Medal and several Marksmanship Badges. He was honorably discharged in 1965.
James had a distinguished career and dedicated many years of service to the Department of Justice and Department of Corrections, where his integrity, professionalism, and compassion left a lasting impact. He was deeply respected by his colleagues—many of whom became lifelong friends.
A Devoted Husband and Family Man
While living in Washington, D.C., James met and married the love of his life, Joyce Cunningham. They were united in marriage on June 4, 1966, and walked through life side by side for 59 beautiful years. Their union was blessed with their one and only (and favorite!) daughter, Jenise, who brought joy and lively energy into their lives.
James' family was the center of his world. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Rodrick and Erykah, and a cherished presence in the lives of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Faithful Servant
James accepted Christ at a young age through the nurturing spirit of his mother. He continued his spiritual walk in 1976, by joining Zion Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. where he served faithfully for many years as a member of the Trustee Board. Upon retiring and relocating to Palm Coast, Florida, in 1997, he joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as Ministry Chair for the Trustees and was a member of the Men's Choir. James was a servant to Christian stewardship, providing oversight of God's resources in the church, and spiritual mentorship in his various roles in the church.
Cherished Memories
James was an active member of the Free Masons -Iconic Lodge #17 Washington, D. C., African American Cultural Society-Palm Coast, and the NAACP of Palm Coast. These organizations held a deep personal meaning to him.
He also had a deep passion for golf and was a proud member of the Eagles Golf Club of Palm Coast. One of his proudest achievements was scoring a hole-in-one on June 8, 2004, at the #3 hole (145 yards with a 7-iron) at Halifax Plantation Golf Club. Even when he could no longer play, he enjoyed watching his friends from the comfort of his kitchen window overlooking the 17th fairway of Cypress Knoll.
James and Joyce were avid travelers—cruising, flying, and driving across the U.S. from Hilton Head Island, S.C. to Hawaii, Greece, Alaska, and the Caribbean. They were inseparable and adventurous, living life to the fullest.... together.
A Life Well Lived
James leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and service.
Left to cherish the memories of James is his beloved wife, Joyce; their devoted daughter, Jenise, (fiance' Bruce), and his treasured grandchildren, Rodrick and Erykah and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, church family, and life-long friends.
James Freeman's life was a testimony to his unwavering devotion to God, and steadfast commitment to his family and community. His legacy lives on in every prayer, every act of kindness, and every life he touched. We rejoice in knowing that he is home with the Lord, beginning his eternal assignment, and watching over us with love.
Serve one another in love." — Galatians 5:13
