James Barnes, 92, native and lifelong resident of Crescent City entered the sunset of life on Friday, August 21, 2015 at his residence. The son of Johnny Barnes and Evelyn Snyder, he was born on Tuesday, January 2, 1923. He was educated in the Putnam County School District (Middleton High School). James, affectionately known as "Step Light," had a dedicated entrepreneurship in Agriculture. He served as a labor contractor traveling and managing workers throughout numerous states. He was a longtime member of Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, Crescent City, where he served as a Trustee and on the Steward Board. In later years, he became a member of Bethel A.M.E Church of Palatka under the leadership of Reverend James H. McGriff. His passions in life were fishing, watching baseball on television and occasionally attending baseball games. James enjoyed being with his family and best friends. He was especially fond and protective of his younger brother, Roy Brown, Jr. In addition to his parents and younger brother, James was preceded in eternal rest by his step-father Murray Dawson and son, Dennis Gregory Barnes. Lauderdale; Bruce (Alice) Barnes, Palm Coast; Byron Barnes, Melbourne; step-children, Reginald (Debra) Cooper, Tampa; Debra Lopes, Silver Springs, MD; Theresa Mason, Pomona Park; Crystal (Steve) Bennett, Jacksonville; Douglas (Darlene) Cooper, Providence, RI; Gary Cooper, Fayetteville, NC; sister, Naomi Padgett, Daytona Beach; special sister-in-law, Helen Brown, Crescent City; best friends, Arthur (Emma) Forman, Billy (Marilyn) Harrison, all of Crescent City; Sherman Miller, Deland; 61 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren, 43 great-great grandchildren; 5 godchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5:30-7 p.m., Friday, August 28, at Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, 200 Cedar St., Crescent City, Rev. Willie Williams, Pastor. Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 29 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 719 Reid St., Palatka, Reverend James H. McGriff, Pastor is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Randolph Street, Crescent City.
