Brigadier General Holsey Alexander Moorman (U.S. Army, Retired), 84, of Palm Coast, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at AdventHealth Palm Coast. The son of Holsey James and Grace Walker Moorman, he was born on Wednesday, May 18, 1938 in Roanoke, VA. Holsey was educated in the Public Schools of Roanoke, VA and graduated from Lucy Addison High School. He earned an Associate's Degree from Thomas A. Edison College along with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Park College. His studies included Engineer and Quartermaster Schools, Command General Staff College, Duke University and the U.S. Army War College.
Holsey accepted God early in his life at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. He attended Sunday School and other youth activities. Holsey traveled extensively in his adult life and always found a house of worship in each city in which he lived. He relocated to Palm Coast, FL in 2001. He quickly found Mount Calvary Baptist Church and was a faithful servant until his health prevented regular attendance. Holsey served as Trustee Chairman for many years. He also served as the Church Building Construction Supervisor of the Education Building and the Sanctuary.
Holsey met Carrie Boyd in Teaneck New Jersey and cupid took over. They fell in love and were married on August 3,1963. One son (their favorite) Gary Wayne was the result of this union that remained almost 60 years.
Holsey started his military service in the early 1960's. He went to Officers Candidates School and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant and served as Platoon Leader, 104th Engineer Battalion and ascended to Company Commander. His executive positions continued as his rank ascended to Brigadier General. During Holsey's career, he received many awards and decorations, namely: Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with One Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Two Hour Glass Devices, Army Service Ribbon, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Staff Identification Badge, New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, New Jersey Medal of Merit, New Jersey Medal of Honor, New Jersey Good Conduct Award, New Jersey Merit Award, Desert Storm Ribbon, New Mexico Medal of Merit, Governors Unit Award, Unit Strength Award, National Guard Bureau Eagle Award, NAACP Roy, Wilkins Renown Award, Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor (Bronze Medallion). His various positions enabled him to travel all over the United States and many countries all over the world. He retired from the military in 2000.
After taking a small and well needed break from 30+ years of service, in addition to becoming active in his new church; he served as a mentor in the Flagler Public School System, Councilman on the Palm Coast City Council, and acting Vice Mayor. He was also a member of the Advent Health Foundation Board and NAACP.
Holsey loved his family unconditionally. He enjoyed family gatherings on ocean cruises, bus trips and get togethers. He also loved music of all genres but mostly gospel and jazz. But, he would always two-step to "Atomic Dog" by Parliament Funkadelic. He was always dressed to the "nines". He was a true friend to many and always extended a helping hand. He owned and fancied classic cars from GTO's to Corvettes. He always "shot from the hip" when asked for his opinion or advice. He was also an avid photographer, always behind the camera rather than in the picture.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his sister, Delores Wainwright; brother, Roger Moorman.
He leaves to mourn: devoted and loving wife of nearly 60 years, Carrie; dutiful and obedient son, Gary Wayne (Tunya) Moorman, Ashburn, VA; grandchildren Chimere and Darryl; great grandchildren, Chianti, Katelyn, Marzieh, Brisea and Azarious; nephews, Oliver O.
