Obituary

Henry Milton Zanders, 88, Philadelphia, PA., entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Orlando, FL., he was the second oldest of six children born to Reverend Jerry and Ever Lee Zanders on Wednesday, July 5, 1922. During his childhood years, Henry resided in numerous cities in Florida as the Zanders family traveled according to his fathers assignment as a Methodist Minister. The family settled in Palatka, Florida and Henry was affiliated with Emmanuel United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Central Academy High School, class of 1942. Henry was a United States Army World War II veteran who served honorably abroad in Normandy, France; Rhineland and Central Europe. Upon returning to Palatka, he was employed as a Box Inspector at the Box Factory on 12th & Lemon Street and subsequently at the Florida Furniture Industries. He met his soul mate, the love of his life in Palatka, the former Johnnie Mae Baker and they were united in marriage on May 26, 1947. In 1955, they moved to Philadelphia and resided there 55 years. He really loved his family and demonstrated it through his actions. Henry was a loyal longtime employee of the West Laurel Hill Cemetery. Henry was noted for taking pride in his duties, serving with a superior work ethic, providing compassionate care and sharing the cemeterys history and prominent sites until his retirement. Brother Zanders worshipped at Prayer & Faith Temple Church of God in Christ with his family until his declining health prevailed. He loved hymns, had a dynamic singing voice, and was also an avid reader. Henry was an academic minded individual who enjoyed discussing current events, sports, and historical data.

In addition to his parents, 3 brothers, John, Nathaniel Ship, & Wilton Alphonso Zanders; and sister, Dorothy Sister Zanders-Davis; two grandchildren, Latrecia Baker and Christopher Zanders, preceded Henry in eternal rest.

He leaves to cherish his legacy of love: devoted wife of 63 years, Mother Johnnie Mae Zanders; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Zanders-Rambert and Elder Lester Rambert, all of Philadelphia; son and daughter-in-law, John H. and Pamela A.
