Henrettia Britten, 103, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Monday, July 20, 2020 at Solaris Healthcare Palatka. The daughter of York Thomas, Sr. and Martha Jane (Jones) Thomas, she was born on Thursday, April 5, 1917 in Pelham, GA. She was educated in the Mitchell County GA School System. In 1949, she moved to Putnam County and has been a Palatka resident for over 70 years. On December 1, 1951, Henrettia was united in holy matrimony to Willie Britten. In July 1952, she united with Bethlehem Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend F.K. Buxton and was active in the senior choir. On April 5, 2015, Mother Britten united with Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend Karl N. Flagg. A retired homemaker, her hobbies included fishing, and she enjoyed watching baseball and boxing. As the matriarch of the family, she especially loved taking care of her family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Henrettia was preceded in eternal rest by her son, Roy Lee Thomas; brothers, Viliana, Sylvania, Larry, Russell, York, Jr., Alfred, and her twin brother, Henry Thomas; sisters, Lena Coleman, Gladys Acree, Annie Hill, Petronia Favor, Ethel Hines; grandson, Rodney Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughter, Shirley Britten, Palatka; "like a daughter," Agnes (Ronald) Peacock, Tallahassee; 5 grandchildren, Darrell Thomas, Tampa; Donna Thomas, La'Tonya Thomas, Palatka; Corey (Keisha) McCray, Palm Bay; William (Kayla) Jenkins, Palatka; 21 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; goddaughters, Carolyn Scott, Gainesville; Christine Bolden, Palatka; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines (including required masks) a limited, socially-distanced visitation of family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, July 24 at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." A private Family Homegoing Celebration will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 25 at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Reverend Karl N. Flagg, senior pastor, is the eulogist. Reverend Tommy J. Rodgers, Sr., pastor of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, presiding. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery.
