Obituary

Hazel Garvin Roberson, 71, of Palm Coast, FL, transitioned into eternal rest on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice Care Center, Palm Coast. On Sunday, November 24, 1940, a beautiful angel was born to Deacon Alexander "Hooby" and Mrs. Isadell Thomas Garvin in Sylvania, GA. At an early age, Hazel joined Black Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where she was baptized and served as an usher and in numerous other church ministries. She was educated in the Screven County, GA public school system and a 1960 honor graduate of Sylvania's Central High School. Following graduation, she earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Elementary Education from Savannah State College; Masters of Science degree in Education from Lehman College, Bronx, NY; and Masters of Science degree in Administration & Supervision from the College of New Rochelle, Rochelle, NY. Hazel was united in marriage to Eugene Roberson and they became parents of two sons, Eugene, Jr., and Keir. Since relocating to Palm Coast in 2000, Hazel became a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where she organized the Christian Education Ministry. She was also an adjunct professor at Daytona State College (Flagler Palm Coast Campus). A true community volunteer, Hazel was active in numerous organizations including: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., African American Cultural Society, Inc., the National Association for Negro Business and Professional Women, NAACP, and the Retired Teachers Association. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in eternal rest by her brother, Deacon Lee Heyward Garvin. Those who cherish her loving memories: two sons, Eugene (Kymm) Roberson, Jr., New Castle, PA; Keir (Judith)Roberson, New York City; sister, Mary Bell Elder, Delray Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Earline Garvin, Savannah, GA; 3 grandchildren, Miles and Marlon Roberson, New Castle, PA; Leilani Roberson, New York City; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., church family at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, special caregivers, niece/god-daughter, Jessica Lonon, Sylvania, GA, sister-in-law, Joyce Roberson, Danbury, CT., special friend, Hope Laws, Palm Coast and numerous sorrowing friends. Visitation of family and friends will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2012 and at 7 p.m. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will conduct a public ceremony at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Pine Lakes Parkway, Palm Coast. Homegoing Celebration will be 3 p.m. Friday, October 5, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Palm Coast with additional visitation two hours prior to service. The Farewell Celebration will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Black Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 615 Poor Robin Road, Sylvania, GA, Reverend Charles Hyde, pastor with visitation one hour prior to service. The Reverend Edwin Coffie, Pastor is the eulogist. Interment will follow the services in Black Creek Church Cemetery.
