Hazel Hilliard Bacon a native of Pavo, Brooks County, Georgia, the daughter of William Hilliard, Sr., and Julia Dunbar, born on Tuesday, July 22, 1924. She spent some of her early years in Trenton, N.J., and relocated to Crescent City in 1975 following the demise of her husband, Albert "Boot" Bacon. She became a member of Union Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church under the pastorship of the late Reverend Benjamin F. Haile and she served as a faithful member and Stewardess. Mrs. Bacon was a dedicated mother (of eleven), grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend. On February 13, 1999, Union Bethel awarded her for "Outstanding Service and Dedication" and in 2002 she also received a Certificate of Appreciation for her "Devoted and Invaluable Service for being a Surrogate Mother". In addition to her parents and husband; Hazel was preceded in eternal rest by her daughter, Mrs. Louise Bacon Brown; stepfather, Collie Johnson; sisters: Mary Johnson, Ceola Morgan, Maeola Tramel and Tessie Robinson (her inseparable sister); stepsisters: Priscilla and Amanda; brothers: Ira "Tom" Gosier, Arthur "A.T." Mitchell, Samuel "S.M." Hilliard and William "W.M." Hilliard, Jr. Hazel Hilliard Bacon transitioned into eternal rest on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Lakewood Nursing Center, Crescent City following an extended illness. She leaves to cherish her memory: ten loving children: Willie James Bacon, Sr., Ira (Robin) Bacon, Phoenix, AZ; Horace (Harriet) Bacon, Tampa; Lois Gonzalez, Emanuel Bacon, Elizabeth (Jerry) Hamilton, Peter Bacon, all of Tampa; Mary Ann Bacon, Mildred Bacon, Trenton, NJ; and Julie (Melvin) Oxendine; 35 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews; special friends: Mrs. Ada Whitaker, Mrs. Eldoris Haile, Mrs. Francis Walker, Mrs. Katy Moody; loving and devoted niece, Ruthie Robinson (Rev. Richard) Carter, DeBary, FL. Visitation of family and friends: 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, 200 Cedar Street, Crescent City, FL. Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30 at Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, Reverend Willie Williams, Pastor, is the eulogist. Elder H. Harry Banks, pastor of Johnson Temple Church of God in Christ, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Crescent City.
