Obituary

Gussie Mae Monts, 79, of Seville, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at her residence following an extended illness. Gussie was a native of Crescent City, born on Saturday, August 6, 1932 to Nathaniel & Annie (Beasley) Lawton and was a longtime resident of Seville. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Saviour and was a faithful member of St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church of Seville for over 50 years, graciously serving on the Deaconess Ministry. On June 19, 1953, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Deacon Bobbie Lee Monts, who preceded her in eternal rest on February 20, 2010. Together, they owned and operated a Seville fernery. She was also a daughter of the Order of Eastern Star. Gussie enjoyed farming, deep-sea fishing, shopping, spending time with her granddaughters and celebrating the "catch of the day" with her family. In addition to her parents and husband, Gussie was preceded in eternal rest by her sisters, Almetia Lawton Mims and Hattie McKnight; brothers, Prince Lawton and Willie Lawton; and daughter-in-law, Eleanor Monts. Those who will cherish her legacy of love; son, Calvin Conwell Monts, Sr., Crescent City; 7 grandchildren; Calvin C. Monts, Jr., Bobbie L. Monts, Jr., Falicia LaShun Monts, Derric Ojae Monts, all of Crescent City; Ashley (Chester) Thomas, Deland; Tanjala (Sylvester) Gillon; Daytona Beach; Calvin (Amy) Martin, Palatka; 28 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; devoted niece, Jamica Mims, Palatka; devoted nephew, Willie Monts, Crescent City; devoted friends; Rose Cook and Willie Mae Howard, both of Seville; caregiver, Sharon Snider, Crescent City; sisters-in-law; Thelma Johnson, Jacksonville; Edna Monts, Crescent City and a host of other relatives and caring friends. Visitation of family and friends will be from 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, February 10 with Homegoing Celebration at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 11 at St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church, 1835 Barton Street, Seville. Reverend Terrance Chester, Interim Pastor, is the eulogist. Interment will be in St. Johns Baptist Cemetery, Seville.
