Gordon James Metz, Sr., 64, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Putnam Community Medical Center. A native of Irmo, SC., Gordon was born on Monday, June 9, 1952 to James B. Metz and Bessie C. (Metze) Medlin. He was educated in the Lexington County SC., School District and later he enrolled in the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Commercial Driver's School. Upon earning driver's certification in 1970, he was immediately hired by North American Van Lines. He was affectionately known as "Dolomite" and gained enormous respect in the "Big Rig" community. Gordon was highly sought after to transport freight that required specialized care and delivery. He took great pride in his expert driving skills and great pleasure in vocalizing his many exploits as a truck man, especially his "Ice Road Stories." During his career as a truck driver, he has delivered cargo to practically every corner of North and Central America. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his brother in law, Jimmie McLeod.

He leaves to cherish his memories: son, Gordon J. Metz, Jr., New York City; sisters, Joyce Metze McLeod, Palatka; Sarah Metze Washington, Columbia, SC; dear friend & caregiver, Sandy Judson, Palatka; and a host of nieces and nephews, including Candice, Jamie, Krystal, Jason and Rondell, other relatives and friends.

Visitation of family and friends from 2-3 p.m., Wednesday, January 4, 2017 and a Celebration of Gordon's Life will be held at 3 p.m., at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity" with Rev. Karl N. Flagg, pastor of Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, officiating.
