Obituary

Gilbert Newton Johnson, 78, of Interlachen, entered the sunset of life Monday, July 27, 2009, in Interlachen following an acute illness.

Gilbert was born Saturday, Oct. 11, 1930, to Nezzie Causey and Newton Johnson in Alachua County. He has been a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for over 30 years. On Aug. 30, 1988, Gilbert was hired as a customer service clerk by Miller's Supermarket and has been continuously employed with Hitchcock's ever since.

Gilbert walked just about everywhere he went and was well known and respected in his West Putnam community. He was a voracious reader with a solid background in journalism.

He was preceded in eternal rest by his mother, Nezzie Causey Garrett; father, Newton Johnson; stepfather, Albert Garrett; and his siblings.

To cherish his memories, parishioners at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church; friends and co-workers at Hitchcock's; and his caring neighbors and friends.

Services will be held graveside, 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Pineview Cemetery, 1212 State Road 20 West, Interlachen, with the Rev. Bob Napier presiding. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1200 State Road 20 West, Interlachen.
