George Howard Mourning, 86, of Palm Coast, peacefully entered eternal rest surrounded by his devoted wife and family on Friday, October 2, 2015 at his residence. A native of Dothan, AL., he was the son of Robert Warren and Thelma F. Mourning, born on Sunday, December 9, 1928. He was educated in the Broward County School District (Dillard High School, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and was subsequently drafted into the U.S. Army. Corporal Mourning served in Company L, 32nd Infantry Regiment, during the Korean War earning the Korean Service medal with 1 Bronze Service Star. As a result of his bravery, he was wounded in action during combat, subsequently awarded The Purple Heart, and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1952. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Elizabeth Mahone Mourning, and to this union, one daughter, Selena, was born. The Mourning's later moved to Belmar, NJ., where they resided for over 30 years. In 1991, they built a beautiful home and relocated to Palm Coast. They united with Greater Friendship Baptist Church, Daytona Beach. After much prayer, they connected with a group of friends to organize a local Baptist church in Palm Coast. Thus, they became founding members of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. He was among the first ordained Deacons (assigned to the Benjamin tribe) and served faithfully and whole-heartedly with love and joy. He loved and thoroughly enjoyed boating and fishing, especially in the Washington Oaks State Park in Palm Coast. He had many fishing stories and jokes and during many of his big crab parties in Belmar, NJ and Palm Coast, George would often say, "You have to hook'em to cook'em." His life was a living testament of his love for God, his family, and his church. George was preceded in eternal rest by his daughter, Beverly Mourning-Hicks.
