Obituary

Deacon George Lee Evans was a native of East Hastings, born on Sunday, March 19, 1933 to James and Josephine (Maxey) Evans. He attended the Silver Hill Grade School in East Hastings and was a 1951 graduate of the Hastings Vocational Training School. Subsequently, George embarked upon a manufacturing career and was a machinist and repairman at Maltby Manufacturing (Snapper lawn mower service dealer) in Hastings for 40 years and later acquired ownership of the dealership for an additional 12 successive years. As an industrious man, he also worked for the St. Johns County School District as a bus driver for 18 years. At an early age, George united with St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church of East Hastings and his longevity and faithfulness in Christian servitude provided him the humble honor to become Chairman of the Deacon's Ministry and Sunday School Superintendent. He was united in marriage to the former Henrietta Williams on Thursday, December 10, 1964 in St. Augustine, FL. George was a pillar in the community who touched countless lives and was an active member of N.A.A.C.P., Hastings Democratic Party, and the Hastings Quarterback Club. He was an avid fisherman and sports fan who enjoyed coaching the Hastings A's/Outlaws softball team and serving as a Florida High School Athletic Association football official for 15 years. George's vanguard faith, work ethic, and pleasurable disposition inspired his family, friends, and the community. In addition to his parents; paternal grandparents, John & Chaney Evans, maternal grandparents, Jasper & Minnie Lee Maxey and an infant brother, Deacon Evans was preceded in eternal rest by brothers, Jeremiah, James F., Clarence, and John J. Evans; sisters, Minnie B. Bartley and Rosia Dell Shazel. He entered eternal rest from his earthly labors at 1:30 a.m., on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Northeast Florida Community Hospice, Bailey Center for Caring in St. Augustine. Deacon George Lee Evans fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith.
